Hi Guys,

I friend of mine is looking at a career change and has always fancied car sales so he has started applying for jobs in new car dealerships, he had an interview yesturday and it went really well, however the starting salary seemed very low to me, ok you get commision but still seemed low. What I wanted to know if anyone on here knows what the starting salry should be for a trainee car salesman? He has only had interviews with one company so far and is not sure if he should take the offer of wait, but doesn't want to wait if the salary somewhere else is in the same ballpark as he wants to get out of his current job ASAP, as he doesn't think they will be about for much longer:).

Mike.

Probably no help to you, but I know trainee car sales can be very low basic. When I was about 22 (so that was about 10 years ago now) I fancied car sales. I was offered a job at a dealer who sold new and second hand cars (however they were only a Proton dealer). I was offered £20 per week plus commission plus the use of any car they had on their forecourt. I declined their offer and got a job as a trainee in a print shop where I was on about £250 per week. I know there would be much better deals around today, but I think this shows that trainee car sales has always been low paid unless you get a good garage where the chance of commission are very high.

What was the salary ?

What was the dealership ?

How old is your friend ?

Where does he live and where is he applying for positions ?

What relevant work experience has he got ?
1. £6000 for the first 3 months moveing to £10000 after 3 months he is expected to sell 5 cars the first month and then 10 cars for the next 2 and then 15 after that, I dont think he will have a problem hitting his targets I just feel £6000 for the first 3 months is a bit low - and from what he said last night with his current financial commitments £6000 basic will be very difficuly for him the first few months especially as he is starting a new job and with training etc.. who knows how many cars he will sell to top up the basic. He is on good money at the moment in his current job he just wants to do a job he is interested in rather than just keep following the path he took when leaving college. I think he will take it but I just wondered if they are trying it on!

2.It was a ford dealership not sure which one.

3. he is 29 next month

4. He lives in St Albans, hertfordshire and is hoping for a job in St Albans or the surrounding areas.

With the economy the way it is, seems like the garage is trying to offer him a chance to prove himself without too much risk to themselves.

Nothing to stop him asking for more money initially, he can easily use the "you get what you pay for argument".

Right well I would advise your friend to steer well clear of a Ford Dealership on the basis that they have a massive turnover of sales staff !!! The salary is no joke, they mean it !!

Having sold cars for quite some years back in the 90s, I can tell you that they had a fearsome reputation for getting rid of you if they wanted to - plus targets were always increased to near impossible heights.

If he really wants to go into car sales, tell him to look at a different dealership like Merc, Volvo, Seat, BMW, Honda etc... I would never recommend a Ford dealers !
