Good afternoon.

Are there any rules in place for the type of trading name that your company can use?

For instance would 'bobbies bits limited' need to be limited to 'bobbies' or can you trade under a completely different name as long as it doesn't encroach on another business?

You can pick a name that is the same as someone in your industry, but you have to make sure that you are not passing of the business as another business with the same name or you could be sued by that other business for damages caused by loss of income they might receive as a result of your business taking away customers. There are a surprising number of businesses operating in the same industry who are not connected to each other yet have exactly the same name. They can trade without interfering with each other mostly because of geographical separation. They include small shops, solicitors, architects, pubs, hairdressers, taxi firms etc.
