Trading name/domain name question

Hello all,
Have a question on domain name/trading name!

I'm looking to buy a domain name to start an e-commerce site to sell initially through Amazon by using FBA plugin on WordPress or Shopify. haven't decided yet but Wordpress seems cheaper and Shopify seems easier to use. Now my desired dot.com name is already taken so I'm considering buying another extension like .co.uk or .me. so my question is what happens if the owner of the dot.com launches a website as well or even worse an e-commerce site?

You will loose a bit of traffic by accident.

If you expect the majority traffic you will get will come from your digital marketing efforts ( SEO / PCC / Social media ) you won't lose hardly any, but if you are planning to market through traditional channels ( Radio / TV / Print / PR ) you have a higher risk they will go to the wrong site.

If the dot com is just being parked ( check who owns it search whois ) then you have little to worry about. If you plan to actually build a named 'brand' then that is another thing, in which case you might want to look at trademarks etc.

I read a post earlier where users were suggesting that Wordpress is more reliable than shopify. I can't remember which thread it was on now though.

Its not really an issue of reliability, it is a matter of control.

With self hosted WordPress ( we are not talking WordPress.com ) you have totally control over your 'business asset'. That may or may not be an issue, if you just want a simple life and don't care for instance that all your eggs are in Shopify's basket, then Shopify might well be the easiest solution.

WordPress looks cheap because the software is free and there are plenty of cheap ( and poor hosts ), but that is because you are not necessarily counting the total cost of ownership. If you want professionally manged WP you will be spending more than Shopify, but if you are happy to tinker & learn and don't count your own time as a cost then WP will look cheaper.

There will always be an posibility.. best is work on your domain the best way you can.. anyone that does good will always rank first .that might hardly affect you in future.

Will look into WordPress as well but as mentioned above Shopify is super easy to use and has all the apps and integrations built in. But not sure if you can connect to Amazon from the UK and this is where Woo commerce amazon integration comes in. There are also alternatives to Shopify like BigCommerce and etc.

It’s all about control. If you are happy for shopify to control everything then use it and pay for all the features you want. If you want ownership and control of your business then use a self hosted platform.

If you like to fiddle and do things yourself then Wordpress works. Follow a few of the tutorials and you could have your shop up and running in a couple of hours.

on another note, I'm looking to set up 2 websites with different names and one of them the same as my company name and the other a trading as name, any legal requirements for this?
