Our Ltd company has over £100K in the bank doing nothing. Our stock levels are maxed out, orders better this year than any previous, and no desire to expand.

With the world going through some crazy political/military/economic turmoil, Is there any reason why we can’t buy gold coins and hide them under the mattress?

I'm not aware of any reason you can't invest in gold (or anything else) - you will be taxed on realised gains

British gold coins that are valid currency are exempt from tax if/when they increase in value. However, if they are company property and you sell them and withdraw the funds, that becomes a realised dividend and you are liable for tax. Gold coins held privately are tax-free.

The currency (pound) is losing purchasing power faster than 5% p.a. If you price the average house in gold you get this result - 1970 - 102 ounces; 1990 - 138 ounces; today - 115 ounces.

BUT in pounds the three figures are £3,667; £53,000; & £268,000.

If your business is yielding more cash than it needs to function, this is brilliant. It is kind of the goal of business, to some extent.

You have options:

1. Pay yourself, and the team, more
2. Find an investment based solution that will yield a decent return. You have suggested one yourself, which is legimate but requires some expertise.
3. Find a new channel of business endeavour which will use this cash well.


Which one is right for you is fairly subjective, but I would tend to go for 2 whilst I considered the longer term choices.
