I would do as much as you can - try different avenues and see what is best. There are plenty of niche and geographic terms you can target. Once you dabble in the different areas you can choose to concentrate on the ones that are working well.

The best way to get work is by reputation - that doesn't come easily.

Nearly all my work now comes from people I know within other businesses, or repeat business, or referrals from customers.

Be helpful. Give free advice - but not free labour. Be polite. Work hard and charge reasonable rates and pretty soon you'll find you don't need to market yourself.

Only problem is I never get time to work on my own website because of this. I've an entire new design ready to roll out, but ... as is always the case .. there is never enough time to do it.
