Correct. I don't see why you would use these instead of just using a self signed certificate.

Then again why not buy a valid ssl certificate anyway as they are really cheap (I sell them for £10/year)!

I just looked in Google and found plenty of ssl providers who supplies it at less then £10 per year. Instead of going for free ssl, I suggest to choose your cert from one of the following company.

cheapsslshop.com
namecheap.com
ssl2buy.com
trustico.com etc.

Out of that list... I personally recommend sssl2buy.com!

Been using that service now for 2 years... and a WILDCARD Cert costs me $70 a year. Totally worth it!!

The expensive SSL's that you are referring to are the EV Certificates. These certs offer the highest level of authentication and involves a rigorous verification process before it's assigned to someone. EV certificate-only browser cues like the green address bar. Do use an SSL which is 2048 bit encrypted.
