The secret of great backlinks!

All this link talk causes me a headache .

Like RedEvo has said, no one can tell if you pay someone and they link to you.

And like i have even seen matt cutts say (so it must be true?) , you can not controll who links to you, if the links are from bad neighbor hoods they dont do nothing bad or good, they are just there in your link profile.

Correct me if im wrong...

I'm ridiculing it because there's no way Google can know a privately negotiated link purchase took place. I wish there was a way. The link based algo is in tatters because of the links industry. The meritocracy destroyed.

I agree with what you say in general but there is a way in a lot of instances because they stick out like a sore thumb.
Like a guy who sells wall stickers blogging about gocompare and vouchercodes - you see these everyday.

They can if someone tells them. The link I posted says...
Google uses a number of methods to detect paid links, including algorithmic techniques. We also welcome information from our users. If you know of a site that buys or sells links, please tell us by filling out the fields below. We'll investigate your submissions, and we'll use your data to improve our algorithmic detection of paid links.
Now I don't want to get into a p|ssing contest. All I am saying is that there are risks involved in buying links. How high these risks are I cannot say. You would have to ask Google.

Ofcourse links have always been about passing traffic, but its also about lead-generation.

Unfortunately, a link on some links page isn't going to be targeted period, and thus wont work - the link must be on a website specifically set-up to generate leads and the average biz link-swap will never aid sales. Links pages aren't prominent enough to display the links and websites are too shrewd about placing links - their going to save the best space for paid links.

The only thing I can think of that might work (for average biz sites), is to attempt to get on recommendation/review sites, but am not certain how many of these exist or whether there's industry-specific ones about.....

Also theres lots of talk about adding content to biz websites, and seen a few do this, but honestly it looks awful, these aren't portal databases or anything and a ton of rehashed content just ruins what was a perfectly good site. Plus, if people do link to it, its only the content their linking to, and not the actual website itself, which isn't exactly flattering, nor a vote for the actual site and I'd rather have my website thought of in high regard, than any article, guide or knocked up content any day.

Content rich websites - is king, but must be done with care.
