    Hello

A good starting point would be to gain advice from those who are treating her, or her local authority. In some cases the local authority will pay for adaptations to people's homes to help make it fit for someone with a longer term condition or a disability.

If your friend lives in council or social housing, the starting point would be their housing department or the housing association. They will send someone along from occupational health who will make an assessment as to what provision may be required.

Not sure, you might like to try someone like Charities Aid Foundation for advice on fundraising and how to go about it properly .

Often local authorities will have agreed turnaround times they have to meet for issues like making an assessment on adaptations to the home. If they aren't meeting them, then the family can use the council's complaints procedure and this usually moves them along, or a good tip is for the family to write to their local MP, ward councillor/s and the relevant lead cabinet member for housing/social services (all this information will be available on the council's website) and this will speed things up no end!!

This maybe quicker in the end then trying to raise the money through individual donations.

Another option, depending on her condition is to approach the relevant charity, sometimes they have funds that can be applied for, or there may be a local charity in the families area that can help.

    Good luck

I agree with Jason. Bank accounts look scammy and I doubt the bank would allow it anyway. Those high profile cases you see in the media are set up as bona fida charities.

As reagrds of raising money. You will have a tough time competeing with the likes of Children in Need so I would forget trying to raise cash as such. Rasing money to buy a particular piece of equipment however is differernt. You just have to think outside of the box - as thay say.

£10 quids worth of meat for example from you local butcher will pull in a £100 quid by running a meat raffle in a pub Sat or Sunday. 2 local pubs and there £200 quid if you twist the butchers arm and get him to donate the meat and many will.

Get you local rag-sheet in for support and in a month that £200 could easily grow into £500 - and then what are you going to do with it.

Waste it on having a door widened for a wheelchair. A step in bath perhaps and handlegrips. Well that would be a waste because as E -PR says the local authority will provide these and depending on area & the urgency of the case it can takes just weeks.

In other words OP you would better off waiting to see what the LA have to offer and then top it up with some nice home comforts for the child.

And finally may I mention one thing that I am sure must offend all people with a disability and that is your use of the word 'her daughter is sick' . Being disabled doesn't usually mean that you are sick or even ill. I just means having a physical handicap.

I have one. I am getting old and can't run around like I used to. The bottom line OP is that you are not doing this young lady no favours by calling her sick. Frankly - you are doing her mother no favours either trying to play the knight in shinning armour - and I don't mean that in an unkind way. It is just that this equipment costs a lot of money. Money that is provided by the government and which your friend could be missing out on by relying on you.

Your support then could be just a matter of helping filling out forms and that in itself is valuable. Good luck.

I know several sick and disabled people who have had whole bathrooms put in downstairs, new rooms put in etc by the Government. Many people don't look into this as it seems to complicated to fill out forms etc but there is tonnes of help available.

And there is me thinking that in a county with a famous university the population could express theirselves a bit more effectively other than have to rely on the **** word every other word.

Well after that rant & rave at my post which I thought was pretty constuctive all I can say is 'go wash your mouth out punk' and try and get some help on anger management for your own sake.

Slightly confusing without knowing the nature of the sickness, but quite reasonable to assume a person needing a stairlift was disabled in some way.

Just a quick reply as I dont want to get into this debate with replies by some people who are not exactly sure how the system works within England.

The government in this country does not supply all equipment for all people with any illness or disabilty.
It varies greatly dependant on which part of the country you live in and what equipment can be provided.

There is however, many organisations that can help with specific items should they be needed and are not provided by local authorities.

Should you be looking for a particular piece of equipment you can of course go down the fundraising route, which does help locally in many cases and may help towards costings for equipment.
Should this not raise enough or you wanted to look at other access routes then PM me your local area and I could possibly provide you some contact numbers of local or national charities who provide or help towards specialist equipment.
