I've just discovered this next to people's names in threads, showing if they are currently online.

It took me a couple of minutes to realise what it meant... I initially thought it was to do with how many posts you had made.... but then the penny dropped.

So, how can I take advantage of the fact that someone is online?

On the right side of the same area as the "green light" are details of Join Date, Location, Posts. Under that are some pictures that indicate what instant messenger programs that person has.

Also at the bottom of the page is a section headed "Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread" and that shows people looking at that thread. You can click on that and it takes you to their profile, where you can also send a PM and email.

edit - just discovered that if you click on the green light a number of options are shown to you - ooh I like that!

Only a Safari bug, it seems. Works in Firefox. It's strange, as it's only these forums where that transparency takes place, even though many forums I go on use vBulletin.
