Whilst you've pretty much covered everything, I feel the best methods of link baiting can be your networking capabilities. A bit of recognition from a reputable/authoritative individual/source can certainly get your content more exposure.

It's worth monitoring trends and new topics/news, talk about something that is trending and what people are talking about / wanting to know about. Even if this is a top ten list or best tools/apps to do something, everyone likes a list or a good review.

I do use my PR diary regularly to source 100's of events in the months coming that relate to my clients keyword(s)... I develop ideas from this and as you say create appealing and relevant content on and off page.
