Hi all,

decided to actually do some research on eBay.. well, more of a way to find consumer demand and seeing if im missing any potential items to sell in my field.

Has anyone used Terapeak? seems pretty useless to me, i think im using it wrong.

Im not trying to find what is selling well on eBay or decide what to sell, i know what i sell, we are a specialist company, i just want to know whats selling the best in a particular category by volume to see whats shifting / what people want.

For example, if we sell office furniture, i just want to see what people are buying.

When ever i select my category it doesn't seem to let me continue as it says it s parent category (not sure what it mean by this but it is the cat all of my items are in, for example "Office furniture -> Desks"

Cheers

Steve

Hello @Steve_g
I believe I'm familiar with the message you're encountering when you go to research Office Furniture in the In-depth eBay Category Research section. Here is the answer to this topic from our FAQ:

Why do I encounter an error message related to restricted level 1 and 2 categories when I try to research certain parts of eBay?

The error message in question is: "This is a top level category. We're sorry, but eBay does not permit detailed research on this category. Please select another category or use the Search report to research listings in this category." As the message describes, Terapeak is prevented from providing category research for top level categories by the marketplace. Since the category in question does not contain any lower level branches, research in that part of eBay's market is restricted. Listing data related to the category in question is still available to research through Product, Competitor and Hot Research reports.

I'm sorry that eBay limits category research for that particular branch, but we do still offer access to all the listing data in that category if you take a creative approach.

For example, you can go to the In-depth eBay Hot Research section, choose the Hot Titles view and browse through best-sellers with the report filtered by the Office Furniture category.

Another option is to use the Product Research section to run keyword searches related to common products in that category, then switch to the Top Sellers view to see the seller with the most sales for those keywords, then switch to Competitor Research on that seller and browse their best-sellers. (The best selling listings from the seller with the highest sales related to Office Furniture invariably uncovers best-selling office furniture leads.)

For more help, you're welcome to check our resource center at Terapeak's site, or reach out to our support team. We're always happy to hear from new and experienced users.

Thanks!
Matt
