Tax Payment by BACS: what is UTR followed by letter 'K'?

Just setting up a BACS payment to pay this years tax. This is the IR's instructions:

"You’ll need to use your 11-character payment reference when you pay. This is your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’."

Does this mean I have to add the letter k to my UTR number? And does it tag directly onto the end of the UTR?

Yes, it means exactly that.

If your UTR is 1234567890, your reference would be 1234567890K

the IR does say that but doesn't give an example, and then tell you that the payment will fail if you get the number wrong....

Yes, an example on their website would be helpful, there are a few instances like that on the forms.
