Hi I have been using tas basic for a couple of years, however I had trouble with my computer and had to wipe it clean. I backed up my tas basic and when I got my computer back I tried to download tas basic again, however I have not been able to!!

Can anybody help me please?

I had the same problem. My copy of TAS basics crashed after using it for a few years. As some forums suggest, I uninstalled TAS, removed all the TAS directories and ran a registry cleaner but I still got the dreaded "btrieve" error when I tried a fresh install.

Oddly, I was able to get TAS basics to install on my laptop, so I now have to do the accounts on that!

TAS used to have an informal support page on facebook, but that has been unavailable for weeks now. You can phone for help, but they want £70 plus just to speak to you.

I guess your options are to try the clean install method I tried without success to see if it works for you. If not. try another computer or pay up for TAS support.

If you do get TAS basics installed, I suggest turning off the automatic updates to avoid future problems.

Hope this helps.

Assuming it's TAS books as its been discontinued wouldn't it be better to look at an alternative?

Especially with Making Tax Digital (MTD) looming.

It is indeed TAS books from way back, but it works for me and any alternative involves more cost which I do not need in these hard times. I already cope with MTD using a third party link and that has been working fine for a couple of years now so I am reluctant to change things.

I do understand.

Perhaps some options to look at VT cashbook (it's free) and FreeAgent (an online option) which is free for businesses who bank with NatWest, Mettle, RBS or Ulster Bank.

I did mean MTD for Self Assessment when I mentioned the looming MTD - that may or may not be relevant to you.

I used to use TAS back in the day, it was excellent software. I chose it for two key things: the ability to edit entries when you have made a mistake, and to be able to switch between cash and accrual accounting for VAT. Neither were possible with Sage at that time. Unfortunately TAS was bought by Sage and it went rapidly downhill as they started to gouge users for 'upgrades' that we didn't really need.

I do still have an install CD for TASBOOKS2 and an upgrade CD from 2008, But whether those would install on a Windows 10 or 11 PC is another question.

I think you should bite the bullet and change to something else as even if you can patch things up now, next time could be worse, and maybe at an awkward time.

I changed to Accounts Portal. Not quite as slick as TAS, but it works fine and at £10/month doesn't break the bank.
