Paypal's great as pepole know the brand, however it's a disaster should anything go wrong. Non-existent customer service and no UK regulation either. They froze my account with several thousand pounds in it, for several weeks, as they believed a payment had been made into the account without the customers consent. Make sure you empty the account every day, without fail, into your bank and everything should be fine.

*Puts head in his hands*

Please explain your comment, I've had many people spending quite large sums of money that were "worried about putting their card details into a computer, and would rather use Paypal".
If you are an experienced online retailer, you will of course know how stupid this is, but large swathes of the public don't - fact.
That's all I meant.

The resons i would not use paypal
no fraud screening
no 3d secure to shift liability
no cv2 checks
fees are to high about 4 times the amount i am paying
They do not stick to long distasnce selling regulations
Customer service is dreadful.
When we used paypal we got a lot of chargebacks from paypal compared to the very few using sagepay and streamline you can conclude what you want from that

So i would defently not sell high value goods or low profit goods using paypal as a payment method.

cheers

All points you made are very valid, I think they are rubbish too, but I'm a company not a customer and the customer will often like to see it as an option, you can run more than 1 system at a time, so why not cover every angle.
Give the customer plenty of choice and they'll generally chose you.

Agreed. If your system allows it, and it's not much effort to set up a couple of payment gateways, then why not offer both. If you get a handful of extra sales from it, that's worth it isn't it?

In terms of card payment providers, we also use Sagepay combined with Barclays. If you are just starting to take payments go for the Sagepay Form or Server products - collecting card details yourself (Sagepay Direct) will lead to possibly expensive + complicated hosting and PCI compliance issues.

For a third way, Google Checkout is also pretty good.

We use Paypal

Upsides
  • Very easy to set up
  • Excellent customer service, in my experience (With a business account I'm always able to speak to someone helpful on the phone within minutes of raising an issue)
  • Low/no commitment
  • High customer recognition and willingness to pay using them
  • Low rate of chargebacks/reversals
  • Easy free cash withdrawals, money appears in our account rapidly
Downsides
  • Higher fees than some
  • Some buyers don't like Paypal
  • Impossible to find out why you won or lost after a chargeback attempt (we win about 50%, and have no inkling of why)

Paypal froze my account for 'suspicious activity' 5 minutes after receiving a payment of £5,000 from a client.

It took me 6 months to get it back - I got a standard template email the day before it was due to be heard in court saying that they'd reviewed my account and it was okay. Funny, that!
