Sushi - Love it or hate it?

I'd love to hear what the general opinion is on Sushi amoungst Westcountry folk.

I'm from the Westcountry and love it, but what about you? Do you:

A) Love it
B) Hate it
C) Neither love it or hate it
D) Never tried it (but would love to)
E) Never tried it (and don't want to)

If you love it - do you/would you buy it often and where do you buy it?
If you hate it - what types of Sushi have you tried?

I have to admit I prefer my fish cooked!

Love it!

I tend to have it for lunch at least twice a week and purchase it as part of the Boots meal deal. Drink, snack and sushi for £2.99.....

Thanks for the replies everyone - I saw satrting to this that there was no interest in Sushi in the South West at all!

Beachcomber - perhaps this is where the problem lies? It's a common misconception that Sushi is just raw fish. I'd supply breaded other options like chicken and mayu Sushi rolls, tuna (cooked), prawns, etc. If these options were on offer, would you give Sushi a go?

I've never tried it to be honest but would certainly give it a go. I think there is a generally older population down here so you would run into issues there but there are still plenty of youngsters about.

I must admit that I am not a great lover of sushi, sort of take it or leave it.

Having run a catering business in Devon for about 5 years I know how stuck in their ways a lot of the south west folk are, they like things how they used to be.

This may work in an area that attracts visitors

I dont see the point in this question? Is it a general wanting to know or are you trying to do market research. If you are trying to do market research this isnt really the place to do it.

As for sushi working in the southwest i think you will find that YOSUSHI would say yes it works.

Its a huge craze at the moment so we know it works. You just have to look on asda's and tesco fresh food shelves to see that they are selling it.

I have to admit I am pretty sushi-illiterate!
I would give it a go though - I think the trick with a specialist resteraunt is to make sure there are a few 'safe' options for the less adventurous / veggies among a couple or group so no-one feels excluded.

I could murder a bowl of king prawns with swet chilli & garlic dressing right now!

f) I like proper sushi, but not too keen on the stuff they produce in Tesco and M&S which they label 'sushi'.

Yes i would / do buy it often as a snack between meals. Do i buy it from Tesco's and M&S? If i have to. (There's not too many options in the UK to buy sushi alone the West Country).

Would i buy it from Tesco or M&S if somewhere else did it better? - No way pedro! (As long as i didn't have to re-mortgage my house to buy some)

Im not in the south west but I thought Id chime in anyway.

I personally love sushi, but decent sushi is very very hard to get in the UK. YoSushi is okay if nowhere better is available, but the supermarket nonsense is just awful.

There is a great Japanese place near me that does superb sushi which I get to once a week or so.

I love sushi - both fish and veg varieties but have only found good stuff in restaurants. It appears more in supermarkets now in larger towns and last time I was at Temple Meads you could get it there but I don't find any of those that tasty. The rice just isn't right. If I could have good sushi for lunch I'd definitely go for it.

One thing that annoys me is that they usually sell it with chopsticks, but they usually sell sushi you're supposed to eat with your finders so it's a real waste of materials.

It's a great alternative for people who have wheat intolerances and so feel bloated after eating sandwiches.

Love it! The selections are usually so poor in the UK though (salmon and tuna, rare to find raw fish). I'm looking forward to trying a little local place in Greenwich though.

Yet again I have to agree with Liam @ GLOW. If you are doing market research you need to do it in your local vicinity. There is no point in coming online and asking a bunch of people that don't live in your community if they like sushi.

To me it feels like you already have your heart set on running some sort of Sushi based business and want to manipulate your "market research" results to suit your own desire.

Sushi is popular in Bristol - Yosushi/Tescos/marks & Sparks - pretty much every chain sandwich shop sells some sort of sushi box now. I quite like westernised/americanised Sushi but having just spent 2 weeks in Japan, I really cannot stomach the authentic stuff. About as authentic as I get is a restaurant called Obento in Bristol.

I think you need to get out there with your clip board and pound the streets for some true results for your research. Good luck!

Sushi is great when you find a real little gem of a place. I think yo sushi is awful. The food is mediocre but the prices are extortionate for what you get. Wouldn't touch supermarket sushi with a bargepole Got a fish mongers here that loads the fish off the back of the boat and into the shop. Can make some serious sashimi with it! Café Japan in Golders Green does it well, and the majority of people eating in there are japanese. Probably a good sign in the good ol' jewish heart of north london!

Never tried it. I wouldn't mind trying it, but never been tempted by the pre-packaged stuff in sandwich shops, would rather try it somewhere good.

Not aware of any sushi places in Cheltenham, surprising really I would think it would be popular around here (based on nothing but stereotyping )

I absolutely love sushi!! Used to live in London then Bristol, so always could get sushi, now live in North Devon and no sushi whatsoever, am gutted!! Can only get rubbish supermarket ones, which frankly are dire. Once you've had proper sushi, you don't want to be eating tescos non finest!!

One small independant shop here sold it and it always sold out on a lunchtime, then their supplier folded so they stopped, but when i spoke to the owner she said it was very popular with all age groups, but tended to contain more veg rather than raw fish. But she said she didnt make much money on it so didnt bother pursuing it again, so now i make my own with varying results. Did consider operating sushi making business from home to sell here, but am tied up in my publishing business so not enough time.
