Hi hope someone can help; I am a sole trader electrician, only started last year and work is sporadic. Anyhow a friend of a friend has introduced my to a builder who has alot of insurance work and can keep me busy. If I done most of my work for this builder would I be classed as a subcontractor to him. Or would I just invoice him as I would do a private customer ?

If you keep control of the way you d the work for the builder, you are probably self employed. You tell him how much you will charge. You decide who will do the work, You control when the work is done.

If he tells you to turn up on Thursday to do x work that he will pay you y money for, and he provides the materials or even the tools. It may be awkward.

If you have other clients and you choose which work is done first etc, then it may not be a problem.
