Stripe vs Braintree

Hi there,

I am trying to decide between Braintree and Stripe as payment processors but I am having trouble making my decision. I run a subscription based website so must of the payments I take are recurring. I might start charging for other ad-hoc services down the line. Right now I just use GoCardless, but I think I am ready to move on and start taking credit/decit cards.

Do you have any positive/negative experience with either company?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Andrea,

We use Braintree for our web hosting monthly payments along with our other one off payments for domain names, SSLs etc. It has been fairly painless to integrate and use. It also has the added bonus of being free for the first £30K. I have no experience of Stripe but we also use GoCardless so that the end user has different payment choices.

All the best
Chris

I'm a bit bias towards Braintree because of how awesome their support , integration system and pricing is. I've been using them for years, and never had any issues. Stripe and Braintree are both amazing companies, but two reasons why I would pick Braintree.

1. Braintree offers a special SDK which allows you to automatically accept multiple forms of payment (PayPal, Credit Cards, Venmo, Bitcoin, Apple pay etc) .. without doing any extra integration work.

2. For new companies joining Braintree, they have a startup plan which allows you to accept $50,000 in sales for NO FEES.. Yes the 50k you transact on Braintree is 100% fee-free.. can't argue with that :)

+1 for Stripe. We looked into Braintree but walked away because it's owned by PayPal. I won't get started on the sore subject of PayPal but we avoid it at all costs unless it's a requirement (ie. one of our partners who we are an affiliate for only have PayPal as an option for transferring our affiliate funds).

I looked into using stripe, but did not like the interface on the selling site. It may just be me, but I am not too convinced to enter all the card info into a box which is then sent to stripe. I think braintree works in a similar way. At least with paypal and others, you are transferred to the site, then enter the cards details.

By the same token, it's the reverse why Stripe appeals to us. It looks integrated, well it is integrated. Yes, PayPal adds trust (but of course, PayPal only supports the buyer) however if a brand is going about it the right way, their brand alone can instill trust.

Ok thank you for your messages! @Dawn Osolinski how is the customer support of Stripe? That is one of the negative points I have read from them. Braintree seems to have better service.

@RyanTrustSpot thanks for your reply! I have seen those pros with Braintree but actually Stripe seems to be cheaper for European transactions vs. Braintree... But definitely the first £30k no fees helps.

@NewGardenStyle thank you for your comment... What sort of security issues have you heard? My main concern so far has been poor customer service and that they seem to close accounts quite abruptly without really giving the chance to explain or letting the user know why... All this linked to poor customer service as they do not seem to be very responsive.

@nahosting thank you for your comment. Have you been overall happy with Braintree? I think keeping GoCardless will also be a solution to give users more choices, as you said. My only reasoning here is that Stripe might be cheaper in the long run as their "European pricing" is cheaper than Braintree's. Obviously the firt £30k without fees sounds appealing...

Thank you again for your replies.

@Andrea GV Very good actually - We often get clients who want a gateway solution and we reach out to them and they're very responsive. However back when they started we did have an account manager but now their team has grown it's whoever gets back to you first but that's not necessarily a bad thing it just means more workforce. But (I mean BUT!) they are very strict on their guidelines for example company types - If your business type or activity looks suspicious they will just cut you off, end of. Even after you email them and ask them to reconsider. It's both a blessing and a curse. So would consider looking at their terms to see if your company type is a category in the "white list".
