Stopping Self Employment

Hello

I am registered with the HMRC as a self employed sole trader but I am not working and have zero income. I have been caring for my disabled brother for a few years and I have been keeping my self employment status open to be able to pay my class 2 national insurance contributions. I want to cancel my self employment status with HMRC and become a full time carer for my brother.

My Question is:-

1.) Can I use the online form to notify HMRC of my stopping of Self Employment and can I put a date that is 4 months previous to todays current date. For example if today is 4th Feb 2023 would I be allowed to put on the form ended self employment on 31st September 2023?

2.) Would HMRC send a confirmation letter saying that I have stopped my self employment on that date (For example 31st September 2023)

3.) Would submitting the form with the date 31st September 2023 mean that I would be officially classed as not being self employed after the date of 31st September 2023.

Just to add that I understand that I would need to complete a final self assessment tax return after 6th of April 2024 I to add the date of the ending of self employment on the tax return.

Thank you for your time and assistance in advance.

    Thank you for your reply.

The last time I did paid work was over 2 years ago. I have been living at home with my parents and caring for my brother. I have kept my self employment status to pay my class 2 national insurance contributions.
Do you receive carer's allowance or any state benefits which would give you NI credits?
EDIT: Sorry , just re-read your post. Apply for carer's allowance. Tell them you have no other income.

When you cease self employment you enter the date you cease on your Self Assessment tax return. Once HMRC have that if you have no other untaxed income or additional tax to pay that will usually be the last tax return you are sent (or get a request to complete one) but its not always the case. If HMRC send you a tax return or ask you to complete one you must do so.

I'd recommend giving HMRC a call and they will be able to advise the best course of action. Best time to call is 10am-11am, there seems to be a shorter waiting time during this period (still a long wait sometimes though!)
