Hi Guys

Does anyone have any experience in regards of the regulations governing static Advertising Trailers on private land adjacent to main roads?

Size - Purpose built 16x8 feet display area on trailer

Thanks

Chris

Funnily enough, I just spoke to a chap that runs an advertising trailer company.

According to him, and don't take this as gospel, they are subject to the same planning permission laws as normal advertising boarding. The fact they are on trailers is irrelevant.

However, having a lot of experience in planning permission cases, I know that you can apply for planning retrospectively and it can take months for that to come to a decision. And, you can appeal the decision, which can also take months.

On the marketing side, you want a short sharp notice and Call to Action on a trailer - people don't have much time to write things down at 60mph. ;-)

Some people put on shorter urls than their main websites so it's easier to remember. E.g. debtexpert.co.uk rather than anotherdebtcompanywithalongname.com

No worries.

I forgot to make my point properly. What I was saying was that put it up and apply for planning retrospectively, but make sure your application is on a small area of land just covering the area the trailer will be on. That way if you get refused, you can just move it a few feet and re-apply.

I know of a company that operated a commercial operation from a plot of land for 18 months without being shut down.....

The other thing is, that if it's your land then you're legally entitled to a commercial sign for your business, and if you position your trailer so it's not bordering other land owners then you don't have to notify them of your planning application - I think it's 2 metres in Scotland. Not sure what it is in other countries.

Yes, they can and if you don’t they will move it for you, but they will have to take you to court first. I know of a person who did this - was taken to court and was fined £120 plus £85 costs - they had rented the trailer out for over 6 months at £1000 per month so they were pretty happy with the outcome. We hire our screen mounted trucks, in the few months we have been doing this we have had about 15 letters from a number of council departments saying we can’t park vehicle in such and such a place - because our vehicles are moved around this is not so much of a problem. Some councils are worse than others, especially around London and the home counties.
