Hi everybody
I am planning to open up an off-licence/grocery shop in London.I am thinking what do i need to take care of at the beginning and in the nearest future.I mean licence, insurance, lease, loan and what other general paper-work needs to be done to start it up? Is there any councill or building control needed or fire safety control (and what else) to make sure that the premisses is ready to use. I am gonna create a limited company and me and my business partner both are going to be the directors. Is there any thorough guidance available in the internet?
many thanks

Hiya

Are you leasing your shop and do you have residental premises above? If so, the landlord must have, by law I mean - he might not actually have one, a fire risk assessment. He may also have extra duties on him if he has a house of multiple occupancy (ie renting out rooms not self contained flats) so his fire stuff may be bob on. Best to ask before you pay for a fire risk assessment. You'll need a fire blanket in your kitchen and I'd recommend a fire extinguisher behind the counter. But you do need a formal risk assessment undertaking. (see my website infinitesafety - I cant post links yet - co.uk) this month's freebie would be helpful to you.

You need h&s arrangements but if you employ 5 or more you'll need them documenting. I would recommend documenting your procedures for robbery tho as I know of several personal injury claims which have resulted after till grabbing.

Insurance wise you'll need Employers Liability and Public Liability in addition to insuring your stock and the building. If you have a landlord, it may be worth your while getting an individual quote for your section of the building as many of my clients have had vast increases in their landlord-provided insurance over the last year which arent insurance company imposed, they're greedy landlord imposed!

If you want any further assistance, please do not hesitate to PM me.

Hope this helps

Kind Regards

Claire
