Starting importing from china

Has anybody on here got an information or advise for when looking to buy bulk products from china?

For a couple of years I have been buying and selling things on eBay. But recently have been looking into buying a couple of pallets or possibly more from abroad.

In the end I would love be buying container loads of goods and branding them myself and selling as my own business. But am I right in thinking that this is a better route (buying a pallet load for example before going big)? I have been looking at website like alibaba for smaller batches but any bigger and I would know where to start. Also, how can you trust these sellers on alibaba or similar sites?

I should probably mention that I am 18 years old but shouldn't think that would matter too much.

Anyone with experience or some helpful tips would be much appreciated.

    Hi Jordan

I have my office in China and can help you to develop your purchasing in China.

( Living in UK for over 40 years, now living in China for business reasons )

I will source, negotiate, inspect, pack and ship your products for you.

We can brand your products ( Qty permitting ) and design the packaging etc.

China is a great place to buy, but due to cultural and language differences, its best done through an agent, so they can be your 'eyes' and 'hands'.

You have to pick and choose the factories you work with, and its not the case that cheapest is best.

The factory that understands your needs and can deliver what you want when you need it, is the factory to work with.

If you need help, please advise.

    Good luck with your project.

    Regards

    Ron

    Hi Jordan282,

If you are looking to import smaller quantities, you could have a look at our sister site aliexpress.com, which specialises in small order quantities. In fact, you may find that some suppliers will ship the goods for free, or at very low costs.

In terms of Safe Trading, we must emphasise that conducting due diligence is essential before making any payment. Furthermore, we would also suggest using a safer payment method like Escrow. For more Safe trading tips, please visit our Safe Trading section on the Alibaba.com website.

Or alternatively buy somewhere in Europe like Poland or Holland. The thing is that UK is a rip off country and the wholesale here is just a joke. We were buying i.e. manicure sets - retail price £9.99 to £25.99

    UK Wholesale price: £ 4.95
    Poland Wholesale price £ 2
    China Wholesale £ 0.50

So as you can see you could even buy stuff in Poland and sell it in wholesale in the UK still making 100% profit.
Europeans are much more business switched and it's easy to do business in Europe. Buying wholesale in the UK is sometimes double retail price in Europe.

Bare in mind that you'll usually go through several suppliers before settling down with one who'll supply decent quality. Yes china is cheap, but unfortunately usually quality suffers as a result.

The best advice I could give would be to always consider that in your first few pallets your may encounter really low quality goods. So avoid anything that is likely to suffer BADLY if quality isn't great; especially anything whereby health and safety will be affected. So in short, avoid anything mechanical and anything electrical.

I would pick a few things that you are interested in, find the top sellers on ebay (easy to do via ebay pulse) and then put their user ID's into Goofbays seller turnover tool. That way you will get a breakdown of which products are the best sellers, from the top selling retailers on eBay ;) armed with this research you'll be able to buy smarter, providing you are priced competitively on these items of course.

Work with a good agent when buying in China (Not Chinese) and your problems will be negligible.

There are no short cuts to working with the correct factory and finding the correct products.

Have a look at easyimex, they are run by Brits based in Hong Kong with many years experience in exporting goods from China. There is a membership fee to be paid but they can guarantee quality, arrange shipping, import duties and vat so taking the fear out of dealing with dodgy companies.

I am currently looking at using them myself to source products to import as after looking at dhgate, allibaba and alliexpress and globalsources I am overwhelmed by the shear number of companines and the horror stories I have heard with regards to some of the companies.

    Hello Folks,

I've worked in an eBay company based in UK and the name is e_cell. All of their items are imported in China and they are pretty getting a lot of profit because of sourcing items from Chinese companies. Should you need any help, let me know.

My office in China is right, there is a language barrier but you can solve this by hiring someone you can trust to talk to suppliers.

    Only language barrier?

Hmmmmmmmm I wish it was just as simple as that.

Talking to a supplier in China is one thing (And talking to most Chinese suppliers they will always say, yes, yes, yes, yes, from fear you will go somewhere else).

What about negotiations, contracts, inspections, labeling and ticketing, testing, packing and shipping, export documentation, required certification...............

All this needs to be handled correctly and without knowledge and experience, it's impossible to be done efficiently.

Unfortunately hiring someone in China that only understands 50-70% of what you are telling them, will only lead to more problems.

A UK mindset and the quality standards required in the UK, as well as an understanding of the business culture in China, are key for any person wanting to work with Chinese suppliers to import goods into the UK.
