Hi,

Myself and partner are looking to start a charity that basically helps the donors as well as benefiting our charity and another nominated charity of the donor.

I already know that the donations received cannot receive a gift aid unless the donor opts out of the benefit.

However it is alot of work an I would like to work fully on the project but the charity commission says a trustee cannot be paid for carrying out its duties. Which i think is wrong but if I perform another duty eg accounting aswell as being a trustee would i be able to be paid a salary then?

I have been baffled on how to receive a salary especially as its lot of work involved. I am not looking to get rich, just pay myself the equivelant salary i would be giving up by leaving my current job to run the charity.

I don't know whether to set up a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee and have the company "run" the charity and have all profit given to the charity. Would that be legal? As we would be the trustee of the charity and the directors of the running company.

This is still a idea and we don't really have the funds to pay for legal advice. I have been looking at other charities to see how they are set up and ofter the trustees are the directors of their company that manages them.

Can someone advise?

How to set up a charity where we can be paid a salary. Even if it means combined structure of charity, company limited by guarantee.

Or maybe it shouldn't be a registered charity but a social enterprise. Can they receive donations without having to add VAT? There is a benefit received with a donation.

thanks in advance
