Try GoDaddy. They normally have good offers for SSL certificates. You would need to be careful though because not all certificates are the same. You should consult the people who built your website and/or your hosting providers before you buy.

Hello can I help?

I have had a look at yr site and will come back soon. Our current comodo SSL expires in Jan and we are hoping to copy the site to a new server and put a new SSL on the new server even though they will overlap. As soon as all checks out then we will repoint the URL.

If you get your new cert before the Comodo one expires (RapidSSL or Geotrust) then you qualify for competitive renewal and the remaining time on your Comodo cert will be added to your new cert at no extra cost so you should not lose any months.

For a site which does e-commerce and personal log-ins to tuition material. I don't think we need anything too specialised.

Give a bit con consideration to having an EV cert (makes the bar go green). This adds credibility to your website and builds trust quicker with visitors. The Geotrust brand is not expensive for EV.

That's right. The basics are as follows
  • The Whois must be that of the companies registered address.
  • You must be listed in a public directory like Yell or Scoot
  • You must be able to answer the phone on one of the numbers listed in those directories
  • You must be registered at Companies House
If some of those are not quite there then you may need to send off a utility bill or a letter of authority signed by a professional.

They can take up to 2 weeks but if everything is in order can be as quick as 48 hours.

Sorry I am confused Andy
Are you saying that someone needs the above for the SSL certificate to be installed on a website? I just renewed mine today so I am curious ....

The whois is to me personally mentioning Hofnote Educational Ltd which will check out with companies house at our home address. This is the registered address at companies house.

I have no idea if we are registered in a directory (edit I have just googled us and we are on 192 will that do?)

So I hope this will be ok

I will have a look at your website again now.
Thanks

Question

Is this for processing payment on your own site?

I have a feature where the payment is taken to Paypal and someone told me it says this site does not have an SSL certificate, this is because we do not take payment and obviously paypal is safe.

Regardless of this, I do not want to put people off completing payments, any advice here?

Even if you use PayPal I highly recommend you use an SSL certificate on your site. IT helps customers build trust in your brand and you should also be securely collecting all data. Most systems start the checkout process on site and then direct to PayPal. Some visitors will abandon your checkout before reaching PayPal if they see it is not via SSL.
