While a 297 mile flight from Sumburgh in Shetland to Glasgow today will cost £448.

Luggage.

I have often found that it is more expensive to fly my luggage (in the hold) than me.

So, if you can, don’t take hold luggage. Fine if you are going for a few days - buy yourself extra carry on luggage - but probably not practical if going away for longer.

If you are “buying” hold luggage (or extra carry on luggage) it will nearly always cheapest to buy it (luggage allowance) at the time you book your tickets.

Do you need to select your seat? If you are travelling alone, don’t bother (unless you are prepared to pay for extra leg room seats) just take pot luck when you check in. Possibly not practical if travelling as a family- you may all want to be together.

They always load on top for extras and they the cancel the flight at short notice
We got a cheap flight to Italy once only to discover that Easyjet did not have a pilot
We had to wait for one to be taxied from Gatwick we were at Bristol Airport

I would think the days of getting real cheap flights is going to be a challenge for some considerable time as the airlines try to recover their losses. Previously I would book all my flights for the year ahead as soon as the diary opened, especially when I had specific dates that I needed to fly. Don’t sit there too long though making your mind up about the price, as the clever buggers obviously know your looking and I’ve seen the prices change before my very eyes before I had the chance to add to the basket.

Long haul same again (I fly to SA a lot and there’s not many cheap seats for direct flights) if I have a specific date and I want a specific seat, year in advance if you are fortunate to be able to fly on any day just get a last-minute walk on deal with only hand luggage.
