i recently emailed a solicitor asking about certain services they offer, in the email i mentioned that i was aware they offer this service (as i have dealt with X company in the past, and they provide the service for X company).

Today i got a call from X company, the solicitor has informed them of my intention to set up a rival business and they are not too pleased (i currently use them to provide a service and am going to be removing them from the process and offering that service myself).

Im suprised and upset that the solictor has acted so unprofessionally, and im wondering if there is anything legally wrong with his actions?

Had you appointed the solicitor formally i.e. you were a client of theirs/his? This makes a difference to the answer you will get as to what action you can take next. Solicitors owe a duty to prospective clients as well as existing and former clients so more detail is required as to your relationship status with the solicitor. That will be the long answer, the short one its either a regulatory or ethical/trust breach and yes very unprofessional.
