I think you must inform HMRC in months time after you start.

Hi

You only need to register your company with HMRC which you can do within 3 months of day you start trading but when you do inform them you must put date you started.

E.G Started trading 01/01/2010 sent forms 01/02/2010 you must put start date as 01/01/2010.
