Sole Trader - PAYE system?

Hi
I was advised last week by the IR that it was a legal requirement for a sole trader to have a PAYE system set up even if the sole trader had no employees and had no plans ever to have employees. I have never read this before and am querying if this is correct - if so how do you go about setting one up?

thanks Delly

I can't imagine why they told you that. As a sole trader anything you pay yourself is drawings not salary and not subject to PAYE. I'd get on to them again and get them to clarify this. If they stick to their story get them point you to the particular piece of the legislation.

Don't ever trust just one person in the tax office or any government run thing. If you have a question, ring up two or three times and ask the same question. You never get the same person anyway, so you can compare answers. I have done this before, just to make sure it was the right answer.

Be extra careful when phoning the NI people, make sure you write down names and times of phoning and if possible get them to put things in writing. These people swear blind they haven't said something and if you question anything, they say the computer was down :D

They often get stuff wrong, double check everything!

I've had many a headache over these things, they are a nightmare.
