Hi guys,

I set myself up as a sole trader in october. Prior to this, I enrolled on a electrical course to my part p. Anyway, cut a long story short, I have to go away for a week to complete the course and will need to book some accomodation as its 4 hour round trip so no point coming home.

Even though I did this before i become a sole trader, this course will allow me to complete electrical works as part of my trade and will help with my current business.

Now i assume i wont be able to put the cost of the course through my books as it was originally booked before i become registered but can i claim my mileage and accomodation for this week away

thanx in advance

Hi I will start by saying I am not an expert in this but was looking into something similar for a book keeping client of mine and found the following information:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM42526.htm

This may which may help you determine the best way to treat it but I would recomend asking your accountant for a defiative answer as they will have all your information.
I wish you well in your new business
