Hi everyone.
I've been looking at LinkedIn and have set up an account. I get the feeling it's much more of a tool for b2b then b2c? Is this right? I haven't started my business yet, but it is going to be a children's boutique style website.

I'm just looking at Pinterest I feel like this may be a good way forward for me as I can add photos of my products. How does everyone else like Pinterest? Does it help with google ranking or just with getting your products seen.

With twitter I've heard different thoughts on whether it helps with ranking or not?

Any other comments will be well receive

LinkedIn is a social network for professionals and companies. Before you create a profile on Linked In, make sure you have a plan in place for Twitter & Facebook management as these will be more important for you than LinkedIn when you start.

Use Twitter & Facebook anyway. Don't just expect to get ranking. Your branding, reputation and connection are also related to Twitter and Facebook.

However, if you are looking for a social network for ranking purposes only, create a profile on G+ . Post good quality messages as often as you can with a pure link that goes to your website!

I hope that helps

If you are planning on setting up a Pinterest account then you need to do it properly, as with Twitter and Facebook, you need to be using it regularly and not just to post about your business but engaging with potential customers.

Pinterest has some great features that a business like yours, product based, could utilise and create a great account. With Pinterest there are different boards that you can create on your account, here are a few that you could create to boost interactivity;

- Topics that interest your target audience
- Boards that have an educational value such as tips and advice
- Feedback for your business and products
- Upcoming events that you are hosting or going to
- New products or services
- Showcase your company culture and employees
- Provide proof of your success (customers using your products)
- Discussion groups can be a great way to find out more about your target market as well as any gaps in the market

Hope this helps.

An essential part of using Pinterest is to not just feature your own products.

Though your products may be ace, it's much more important to actually show your clients that you're interested in everything to do with your field. Compliment other designers, pin other products to your boards. You can use it to build relations with other similar businesses too.

I think the more social media websites that you use the better. For example as you said LinkedIn, you can communicate with suppliers and possible business customers through this source. Twitter and Facebook could be used to communicate with your customers, and Pinterest can be used to show the quality of your products to customer. By having as many social media profiles you can reach a much larger audience.

Although linkedin may not be useful for finding clients, you might find it can improve your contacts in other ways. Perhaps getting to know a good accountant or web designer to do work for you, department shops who might want to stock your goods or other local kids businesses to work with to do a great event to attract new custom for mutual benefit.
Facebook and twitter are great for communicating offers, new lines and just opinions and socialising with target markets.
Pinterest is great if it's integrated, particularly with clothes as they're very visual. You could 'pin' many of the great ideas for decorating nurserys and kids rooms as well, showing your expertise in your niche and getting to know other users who could become customers.
If you need to chat more about social media and web presence drop me a PM! Always love to help

Linked in B2B? Yes.

I think you're putting the cart before the horse a little here.

If you are launching a children's boutique style website, check out the kind of online forums where the kind of people most likely to buy from your website engage online. Search Google discussions for children's clothes. See who is saying what and where. How can you add value and interest to the conversations?

My hunch is that Facebook might be where you want to be. If you experiment with the others there is no harm in that. I am starting to love Pinterest for example. Find social media channels which you enjoy. Because they don't always consistently offer direct bottom line benefit.

But they do help you consistently demonstrate your passion and authenticity. And people buy from people they know, like and trust. Seek out conversations not customers - whichever social media channel they may be on.

Both those are pointless for for a new uk business, Iinkedin can be great but you really need to work hard and not just blast yourself into other people's network. Start on the groups and look for people who have value to you and who you can add value to.

Best places to start are Twitter and a Facebook group. Both these you can search to gain exposure to people without them knowing your looking. Use Twitter to build a list and invit those on the list to your Facebook group.

All I see on twitter is people re-tweeting other people's tweets. It's the same as people on facebook who just like & share everything they see.

I don't see this as helping their businesses, just wasting time with what seems to be on the most part, spamming.

No doubt, there can be good use from it, but there are just too many people who think you have to re-tweet everything just to get noticed and hope that others do the same back for you. Quite sad really.

LinkedIn is very much B2B and I would recommend you tried sites like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

It has been rumoured that search engines rank websites higher if they 'engage' on social media platforms (talk with people / not talk at people).

Pinterest is really good for SEO as each link back to your site (each 'pin') is one extra back link and a little extra authority for your site.

Facebook is great for people to find you but if you want to find people give Twitter a go.

Google+ is highly recommended. Google claims it makes no difference to a sites rankings but I have seen that is does make a difference!

Some interesting snippets here to take away and digest for you TICKS, all very relevant. You have to use them all for the different reasons mentioned and find the one that gets the most engagement for your business and make that the top one to use. Blogging about what you do is another way of engagement too which you can post to all your social media channels.

Social Media is tricky, listen to the guys here who will guide you.Two rules I use frequently in mine :

Dont ask buy my stuff- How many times have bought something from a TV advert?
Call to Action- End your posts with something to get them to contact you.

Have a look at my facebook page Premium Plus, my twitter @1playerschoice

I just really want to point out that when you are marketing don't just use the internet, you can also use the old fashion way like giving out leaflets to people in your area giving them a discount code to use or something. this is one thing i stress to my clients, put your website on your business card, leaflets, banners, on the front of your shop etc.

Apart from that definitely use Facebook and Twitter, join groups and fan pages and really start a conversation with people. Plus you can do a lot with Facebook in term of creating a customised landing page and so on which is also really helpful if you need help with that inbox me.

A couple of points i'd add - linkedin is b2b in the sense that you can be getting your service in front of the real decision makers, depending on your connections, the groups you participate in, and if you use the advertising. On no other social network can you target business decision makers so accurately.

All social accounts help to a degree with seo/ranking in google, as its all social buzz, social signals, and shows to google that people are talking about you, you are active as a company, and of course brings those links to your website, which are useful.

Some social media's are more suitable for certain companies, but even while you could see why a fashion company have an instagram account, you can see how a carpenter could too, showing 'behind the scenes' images and creating a relationship between their brand and the followers.

In short, social media is good, is more and more necessary, but there is no one size fits all plan, it changes for every business.

Choosing the appropriate platforms to launch marketing campaigns on should be well thought through. I would take some time to think about many things before jumping in and testing the waters...

Where do your ideal buyers already exist?
What is your management capacity?
What is your current level of knowledge and skills on each platform?
How easy is it for you to learn how to effectively use each platform?
Can these platforms be integrated into a management tool for more efficient maintenance?
What sort of campaign are you planning to run?
Have you considered paid advertising with social marketing? If so, which is the best platform for you for PPC?

There are so many variables to consider, but my advice is to take your time to think it through. And don't be afraid to ask a ton of questions!

Anything I can help with then just give me a prod...
