Social Media Etiquette

Apologies if this has been asked before (I couldn't find the search button)

Can anyone get me up to speed on Twitter etiquette (and Pinterest for that matter) for when someone retweets/likes/pins one of your tweets/images from your business page? I don't know what to do but I feel I should be acknowledging it somehow.

In regards to Twitter if someone retweets your stuff, follows you or replies to you talk to them! It's about engaging. Don't just thank them for following / retweeting - write a personalised tweet to grow brand loyalty and online relationships.

If following someone tell them why!

The basic idea of establishing social media presence for your business is to build connections and gain more prospects. So if somebody follows, likes, or retweets your post, then that's the signal to begin interacting with these people and build a relationship with them. Show them how you really appreciate these people by being more personal in your dealings so they will also help build up your business in the process and gain more followers eventually...

You have to be careful not to be too spammy or to come across as desperate. However if an opportunity to engage in a conversation crops up - jump on it!

I'm always amazed on Twitter how many people won't even like a tweet they've been sent let alone actually respond to it.

However thanking people for following IMHO is just creating noise and people just think "Meh" when they get a "thanks for the follow".

For me personally, I would always try to reply to a retweet or a mention and give it a like. But I wouldn't thank people for following.

Don't know about Pinterest but the principle would be the same.

Or just not bother. Some people 'like' everything, it's like an automatic action they take. They will probably never visit your page again so even if you do engage it won't lead to anything. Reply to those who comment and ask a question but not to everyone who pins something.

Social media etiquette isn't much different from other netiquette, or just regular life etiquette.

If you mention someone in a blog post, let them know socially so they can thank you, reciprocate and possibly mention you in their timeline (to their readership).

If someone does something nice for you, to you or about you, then of course thank them. Learn a bit about them, be interested, ask questions, engage, interact and enjoy.

There's are reason it's called social media... It's not a broadcast platform - it's for 2-way interaction.
