snack van

i recently purchased a mobile snack van..i applied for a street traders licence (mobile)..the van is sort of the same idea as a "jiffy van"..the council have now told me i would be unlikely to get a (mobile) licence due to the 10 minute rule they have ie you are not allowed to sit on the street for more than 10 mins without serving....have explained it only takes 6 mins to cook a sausage..the van is also equipped with bain maries to keep food hot and at correct temperature...so why do they believe my van is better suited to a static pitch rather than driving around on the streets? they said its to do with this 10 minute rule! if i wanted a static pitch i would have purchased a catering trailer with no mot.tax insurance to pay..any advice is most welcome thanks...

I think whomever you've spoken too maybe misunderstanding the 10-minute rule, either that or it's a brand new thing that has literately just come out... and no one knows about yet... because the only thing that I can find anything to do with a 10 minute rule is Parliment's 10 minute rule bill, which has nothing to do with what you're doing.

hi thanks..i am in scotland so maybe the rules are different...an ice cream van in order to be on a round must apply for a mobile street traders licence..the same one i would require...this states you can only sit in a street for 10 minutes before moving on...unless you are serving customers..i think the arguement is cooking hot food in 10 mins for me..which i can do as stated on line square sausage takes 3 mins each side....apparently i am the only person in north lanarkshire council area that has applied for a mobile street traders licence to serve both hot and cold food...speaking to environmental health today who council said they had contacted before telling me it was unlikely that they would grant me a mobile licence, so maybe i will find out what the actual problem is!

hi again, spoke to licencing..apparently the 10 minute rule is in your conditions....once you are approved for the mobile licence...other factors which arose were..where gas is stored...told them i have a gas safety cert...do i use a generator? said no i dont..the main issue is the fact im the only person with this type of mobile business, so it has to be refused and go to a commitee to look at it!..red tape indeed...pointed out i wont be breaking the 10 mins rule as i will be mobile...they said they had pitches for snack vans for the purpose of them having somewhere to go, i pointed out I DONT WANT TO BE STATIC and that my van was purpose built for the business i intend to run!..looks more positive now as ive been able to answer all their queries..i now have to add additional information to application and then put it in..no doubt they will refuse it, but at least i can appeal it..thanks again
