It's like any other communications channel - it depends what service or product you are using it to promote.

It can work well for example on an opt in basis, if you are promoting events or special offers at local entertainment or leisure venues.

Personally I don't recollect receiving SMS from multi-nationals...be interested in hearing how they are using SMS>

Most providers have 'clients' pages which when clicked on are littered with multi nationals! I presume they would use SMS to send offers and updates etc. to customers.

I would only use it on an opt in basis to promote events.

I'm going to give it a go I think..

Works for the instant impulsive smaller value purchase, like a meal or drink etc. Works well for Dominos as an example. Not so sure it's as effective as a marketing method for many other business types, although useful as a text reminder service for the likes of dental appointments etc.

There are huge range of ways that people can use SMS, not just for straight marketing. Many multi-nationals will use it for internal comms, logistics, click-and-collect types messages, as well as promotional communications.
It can be highly effective when used properly, open rates are typically over 98%. If you're interested in seeing how other companies have used it & how effective they found it, Textlocal have a section of their website focused on case studies which should give you some more information (sorry, can't post a link, I'm too new!).
    Hope this helped!
