I have an old 2013 model Asus (Google) Nexus 7 that I only really use to watch Netflix movies on. The picture is fantastic - 1200 x 1920 pixels but it's becoming more temperamental, probably because the operating software is outdated..

I'm looking for a replacement that won't break the bank, so have dismissed the latest 2021 ipad mini at £600+

I don't want anything bigger, although may have to go from 7-8" and do want a 3.5mm headphone jack. No 1 consideration must have very good picture so full HD

Any recommendations?

Samsung tab 7 tablet. Worth buying after the tab 8 will be released end of 2021

Significantly better lcd tech than apple has to offer in that class and more useful features than apple has to offer. Also less bugs and security concerns than apples ios currently has.

As a side note the ipad recommend for £320 has bigger and wider bezels than my drive way and looks very outdated compared to modern tablets

iPad Air refurbs available for just £99, fantastic displays. I have had one since Dec 2013, used up to 6 hrs daily on average, good battery life, never had a problem, on the original battery, never had a repair.

This was the first Apple product I have ever bought, best value for money tech item I have ever owned. Now have the MacBook m1 as well for the last year, that is just as good, but I prefer the tablet.

Apples and oranges, the Samsung is nearly double the price is it not?

I wrote until the Tab 8 launches and prices will go down and same price as the spare parts tablet you bought from Apple. The Apple ipad 7th gen you have there is build on last gen, left over parts apple had lying around and wanted to get rid off hence the very low and weird specs. Yours is the united nations of parts and it shows in all aspects.

Meanwhile the TAB 7 was developed as a new gen. table with full HDR support and latest AMOLD tech for the best possible viewing experience.

But agree the £200 ranges overs good value for money but the displays are poor at best in that price segment.

The main reason for wanting to avoid a 10" screen is that the Nexus 7 would fit in an inside coat pocket. I also prop the tablet on the bedside table, about 14" away and can watch films without feeling as if I'm sitting too close to the tele!o_O

I have some wired Sennheisers that work well enough for me and don't drop out like some previous phones I've tried.

Given the very basic needs, I’m surprised the Amazon Fire hasn’t been recommend, above higher-priced options.

I bought my son the 10” version, and was so jealous, I had to buy one for myself – they’re very good, very powerful, and cheap.

They come in 8” version too, and you can pay £10 more not to have adverts on the screen when you turn it on.

Best of all though, Amazon discount their devices for big events like Black Friday: the 10” version is listed as £149, but was discounted by £70 in the June sales – all versions will be discounted for Black Friday.

Heard some good comments but I try not to give Amazon any of my money and think i'll dismiss it for now as it seems the 8" version is old tech?

I'm flipping between sites, looking at GSM Arena reviews and getting lost in the mireo_O The biggest problem is understanding Nits and PPI. The latest Ipad Mini 2021 has 327 ppi, my old Nexus had 323 ppi. The ones i'm looking at have around 280, but does it matter?

Around 330 pixel per inch is fine for most user. All it means is that from a average viewing distance of 24 inch you wont notice single pixels. Since more pixels req. more energy and have no real advantage anymore they leave it around that sweet spot without putting high capacity batteries in there to compensate for high pixel density power consumption. Some people like to read from 4 inch distance so a higher ppi value is preferred.

Nits would be interesting to consider if exposure and working under a lot of sunlight is required. The higher the nits the better readable under direct sunlight.

Despite my earlier comments and by way of a get out of jail purchase I've just ordered the Amazon Fire 10 HD for £89.99 from Currys which is listed on all sites, including Amazons own developer sites specifications as having a Full HD Screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200.

All that is except Curry's who list it as Full HD 1600 x 1200 which, assuming it was a typo, led me to call their helpline to confirm. 2 hours later and I'm still getting the run around with the only option to engage with an in store expert before collection, which i'm trying to avoid.

Can any technically gifted readers tell me if the term FULL HD can be applied to a 1600 x 1200 resolution screen?

Buy it from Amazon - Amazon list is as (1920 x 1200) with over 2 million pixels (224 ppi)

At least buying from Amazon you will get after sales service.

    ( Same price )
Thanks Alan, but I'd already ordered it from Currys as I needed it and was in stock at our nearest store. It is 1920 x 1200, exactly the same one.

It's a typo on their site which could have been easily sorted if I was able to contact somebody at the store to ask them to look at the spec on the box!

I feel a whole new thread coming on about how technology is working against itself when it comes to customer service.

PS: The Currys price went up yesterday from the £89.99 I paid to £149.99!

    No, it can't be. Full HD is a minimum 1920 x 1080.

    The Fire 10 HD is 1920 x 1200 though giving a 224ppi
