Sku code and Barcode?

My understanding is the SKU code is an internal code given to a product which identifies the product, how many are in stock/sold. A bar code are a set of numbers/readable lines used for scanning. The bar code has to be issued and registered and the information is unique to the company/product.

This is just my understanding, maybe someone can come along and give their view point as well.

Are Amazon asking or insisting for all your products to be barcoded?

If you are reselling products that come from a manufacturer, then it is they that apply for an EAN or UPC validation code. For every product you find in the supermarket with a barcode, it has embedded in it a totally unique number created specifically for that product and no other. When you scan the barcode, the computer goes to a lookup table for that code to identify it instantly.

For example, a tin of 8oz Jones Beans with Raspberry Sauce has an EAN Number of 12345678909 which is embedded in the barcode, so that's what the computer looks for and it will none other. It is then cross-referenced to the supermarket's computer system and the price is drawn up to the POS and stockholding adjusted accordingly.

Not every product MUST have a barcode unless it is food, medicine or from a specific category and I don't think handbags fall into that life or death potential product but I am sure some ladies would disagree with that :D

If there is already a barcode on a label attached to the handbags then you don't need to do anything, because it has already been registered with it's unique EAN/UPC number and hopefully industry standard code that Amazon's readers can scan for it's own stock control system.

SKU, also refered as Stock-keeping unit, is a unique identifier for each distinct product and service that can be purchased. The usage of SKU is rooted in data management, enabling the company to systematically track its inventory or product availability, such as in warehouses and retail outlets.

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data relating to the object to which it is attached. And barcode may be mentioned as linear (1D) or two-dimensional (1D).
