Hi,

I need to design a simple one page website & map a domain name or two to it.

I want it as cheap & possible or free if I'm really honest & it has to look professional.

Any suggestions???

Regards

There's plenty of free website builders around like Wix if you want something free that you can do yourself.

If you want something more professional , then most designers (including us!) aren't going to charge too much for a one page site with basic hosting to get you started

It is very hard to have something free and looks professional in this same time.

Cheapest option without creating an expensive graphic would be for you to put it on free script like WordPress and install free theme, just look for cheap hosting with Installatron and WP would be ready in 2 minutes.

Free themes you can download from here: http://wordpress.org/themes/

I would suggest you follow MZone's advice and try WordPress if you're at all comfortable with just a tiny bit of coding (or searching on google on how to do X or Y).

Otherwise, you should check out SquareSpace (www.squarespace.com) as a better alternative to Wix or, if your website is more in a blog format, you can try Tumbler (http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains) and attach a domain name to it (essentially £5 plus, maybe, a premium theme).

After you've had a look at the above, feel free to PM me and I'm happy to give you one for free but you'll have to pay for your own hosting (I'd recommend 1and1.co.uk as a cheap option but feel free to go for whatever suits you).

I think it would be major overkill to use wordpress for a single page website? I might be relatively simple to do, not sure on two minutes - as someone who is of decent technical skill it took me the best part of a day to get a site up and working with it. Then you have the regular wordpress updates to perform and the risk of security to such a site should it become outdated.

As said, budget options like Wix or that one and one thing they advertise on the television a lot are options but don't look that professional and from what I know of the one and one site, don't work out that cheap either.

Personally I'd contact some local companies for quotes. If you want it to look professional hire one. It probably won't be as expensive as you think and the results should pay off in the long run.

I can assure you that is 2 minutes work only to install WP. You push a button, put a name and it is done. I can provide you with test account at server, so you can check it yourself.

WP for one page is a challenge, but if you do not know basics with HTML and CSS in that subject then that`s the cheapest and quickest way to do it.

You can also try with smaller script which would be better for one page only, it is CMS Made Simple:

Depends what you are looking for really. If you want something simple and quick then a freelancer on of those sites can do a good job, particularly if it's just a one page site as requested here.

Based on what we hear from clients who have tried them previously is that problems usually arise with communication, cultural differences and long term support.

People that come to us prefer to actually meet with a designer and chat about their requirements in depth - they find it leads a design that is more in line with the site idea they had in their heads and they benefit from having a long term working relationship with the same firm should their needs change in the future

Hi Gary
Are you very IT savy?
In my experience it depends on your IT experience and how much time you want to dedicate to it. If you have the time and some IT knowledge then the wordpress route is perfect and there are many free tutorials online and youtube has great videos.

If you feel your time is better spent on your business then you can find a company to sort it all out for you.

Wordpress the most powerful CMS (or so it claims) is overkill for a one page website.

One page is easy to update. Have it static... Wordpress will execute thousands of lines of code and database access when its not needed at all. You would also need to ensure its always up to date and free from hacking.

I also disagree that a free website cannot be professional. using wix and the like will give you an unprofessional look... but they are doing the hosting too... many professional clean HTML5 (and even HTML 4) templates are available out there.
