Sidebar and Menu on Mobile

I'm planning for a redesign for mobile. As well as the main menu, which has 7 elements: three links, search box, search button, login/account and change language, some pages have in some cases have very long side-bars. The importance of the various elements of the sidebars varies.

What strategies have people come up with to integrate sidebars for mobile?

The layout of my pages is not to dissimilar from eBay:

Who I see have a button at the top left saying 'Refine' to open up the hidden sidebar.

Hi Dave

One of the most common ways is to use a 'collapse' technique.

For the eBay example, each of the 'categories' would be a single item.

On desktop it's fine to show all the sub items underneath them by default.

But on mobile, you would display just the main category, with an arrow that then opens up those items for the user.

Similarly to when you click the 'more' item in that eBay sidebar, but at the top level of every group of items.

Hopefully that makes sense?
