Should I scan as JPEG or PDF

I want to scan some stuff into the PC and then "virtually" print it out to some other software

As opposed to keep the original scan

If I have it as a pdf I can "print" it to the software

If I have it as a JPEG I can just copy it in - a time saver but ??

Any ideas on which is best to do or what I should be thinking about to work out which is best to do

Depends on what you are scanning. JPEG is an image format so you can only scan one page into a JPEG file.

PDF is a portable document format so you can have multiple pages in a PDF file.

When you scan to PDF unless you use some OCR software the PDF file will actually just be a collection of images in one file and you can extract the individual pages as JPEG's later on if you like.

Hi there,

Using the virtual print function might not be a wise idea: you could well find that the print driver (the bit of software that converts the PDF to, well, whatever image format this application you're talking about really needs) could well convert the resolution to 72 pdi. Probably acceptable if you're creating an image for on-line use but hopeless if this app. will want to work with a high quality version then you'd be better off saving the image and importing it.

Note that if you using an OCR package to 'read' the text on the page, there's two things I should point out: 1.) OCR really needs something like 200 dpi if it's going to do very well and 2.) Save your image in either PDF or jpg and email it to our service - we'll do the OCR for you and return a searchable PDF/A.
See the website for details (yes, a gratuitous plug I know!)

It is to get documents that we receive into electronic format so that we can store them in a way that suits us and find them when we want to

We use onenote and will be storing the images in there

Not a lot of them and nearly always just a page or to long

We can store them as the files to click on and view or all ready to view -as a virtual print out with pdf's or a straight paste as a JPEG

A mix of text and images

I was scanning in at the default 200dpi at the moment - I had not even thought about that bit - all new to me
