Should I add an online store?

I'm currently debating whether to add an online (opencart) store to our website.

The idea being for example is to have a link from our static "posters" page to our store, where customers can upload their artwork and we print it.

The advantage being customers can collect it from our unit, and we can offer a same day service.

1) I'm slightly dubious about putting our prices in the public domain, where our competition can see it.

2) we're not the cheapest or most expensive but I'm worried compared to other online sites we'll price ourselves out of jobs

3) customers may think we're expensive and not enquire about other products we can't sell online (signs & vehicle graphics)

Am I worrying about nothing or what steps should I take prior to putting a store online?

yes, protecting the store with a password is a good idea. And these days people prefer quality over hunting for the cheapest price - if you justify your higher price, by describing quality of your products, and maybe comparing to your nearest competitor, you could win customers this way.

Nonsense!

I buy print. The last time I bought print was from these people - https://mixam.co.uk/leaflets

Why? Because I could see instantly what the prices were and because I could put my order in on a Sunday! Time is money and that was the easiest and quickest way to get that particular job off the desk. We were pushed for time. We had a trade fair to attend in four days and so Muggins here had to deal with it!

I am sure that there are better and cheaper printers in our area, but they do not have an on-line shop and I can't be bothered listening to a lot of guff about "Well, it all depends!"

It does not depend - an A4 leaflet, roll-fold, 170g, has a price. So does a simple pop-up banner or an A0 poster. If I were your competition, all I would have to do is phone up and ask you what that price is! Keeping it a secret only serves to keep it a secret from your customers!

I do realise that you can't put everything onto an on-line shop, but if I cannot find the prices on-line or if a vendor has a poor on-line presence, I tend to look elsewhere.

As far as vinyl on cars - give examples and examples of prices! Simples!

That way, I can phone you up, knowing what prices and lead times to expect and I don't have to listen to you sucking air through your teeth, muttering something about "Well, it all depends!"

Having price on your website is inviting someone who can afford it and not off-putting them. You should be worried, if you are charging a higher price for the service you are offering.

If you aren't then relax and add and online store, it will make your life simpler and you would be able to focus on other aspects of business rather then thinking about pricing challenges.

Hi David
I vote too that you put your prices into the site, along with your key USP's and company information. Let people know what they get from you that they don't get from others. Stride out and live what you are online, it always works better I believe. If it doesn't work that in itself tells you something and at least you did all as you would want to.

Put your prices on, but you could set the site to only show prices for logged in customers (open cart does this) so give existing customers an account.

I wouldn't do this as it will put people off ordering who may want to order but need a price, just because you're more expensive doesn't mean people won't order, and why do you care that your competitors know your price, if they are undercutting you then it's only going to be a race to the bottom. Proudly show your prices and also put text to tell customers why your prices are higher, people will pay more for quality work
