I'm currently in the process of opening my first business (plumbers merchant)

I'm at the stage getting my shop sign sorted, I was thinking to have a few logos of brands that I will be stocking on the shop sign, is it ok to use the logos? Do I need permission from the company's.

Also would the company be willing to help pay or supply the shop sign if I used its branding?

In my old business, suppliers were often happy to pay or contribute to signage - shop and vehicle. But you have to talk to them first. I would be highly surprised if your Baxi rep did not have funds available, I found the best approach was to ask if they would pay all or part, and have 2 or more contributors, that way you can have more of s free hand with the design, including adding in any non contributors(that you feel, never the less, to be prominent). You probably have a favourite, say, magnetic filter, so approach, say, Adey and explain that there product will be the brand automatically offered unless otherwise specified, but you need some support. You will soon learn what turns on the trade, and adapt your appeals accordingly. But do it with an air of quiet confidence.

Typically, they won't part with hard cash, but offer the same in product at your normal trade price.

Remember the first rule: Don't ask, don't get. And remember that while it pays to be friendly with reps - you never know when you need a favour - they are not friends. So don't be embarrassed by pushing the boundaries a little, they actually need you more than you need them. (generally). But always do it with good heart and a smile, they are human.

Having said that, a competitor of ours in a neighbouring town was a pig to most reps - it still amazes me how much inside info we got. They tried to avoid meeting him, and he only ever got what he was strictly entitled to.

Good luck with your venture, where will you be located?

I'm sure the suppliers/manufacturers would be delighted that you are advertising for them
However I doubt they would want to pay for it,especially if you have some of their rivals on the sign.

I would agree with this. Unless they sponsored the whole sign - therefore you couldn't advertise any competitors - they wouldn't be interested. I also don't think they would be interested unless you can show that you have thousands of people passing your door every day and that they are influenced by your shop's advertising.

Another thing to consider is what happens if a brand/logo is updated, or the supplier/manufacturer shuts down/gets bought out, etc.? Then you'd need to update your sign to show that. It's like those shops that still advertised that they took "Access" credit cards... some for years after Access has stopped.

Finally, and as an aside, I assume you have checked your sign won't be in contravention to any local planning laws, which can be quite strict if you're in a conservation area for example. Here in Lewes, colours of the shop fronts and even doors are controlled because we're in the South Down National Park and a conservation area. (As a town councillor I sit on the planning committee.)

I doubt they will want their logos used unless you are an official supplier so I would suggest you ask them first. If they are agreeable then they will want to make sure you are using the correct colours, etc and will supply the necessary files for your signmaker.

Highly unlikely hey will pay for your signage.

Which, of course, is another consideration. If their logos have quite technical drawings or unusual colours, you may find the cost of producing the sign shoots up.

Asley and Chalkie: I hoped i had intimated in my post that it was my personal actual EXPERIENCE that some suppliers DO pay or contribute to such costs - if they are asked. This may take the form of free product or a credit on a monthly statement. We also had suppliers contribute to local press advertising, and leaflet production. They don't demand thousands of viewers to justify a relatively small outlay. I don't even recall being questioned about how we would measure the success of an ad campaign. the reps had a budget, but they didn't shout about it.

So, to the OP: Go for it, they can only say yes, no or maybe, and let us know how you get on

Suppliers may, but what about the owners of the brands/logos? I'm assuming the OP means the manufacturers of the products he sells, (Acova, Xpelair, Drayton, etc.). If he uses their logos etc. for advertising he may well need permission from them.
