You will be assigned a payment office when your tax record is set up, either Shipley or Cumbernauld - I'm not sure how they assign the offices but I don't believe it is related to where you carry out your business.

You should be able to determine which office you have been assigned from your payment slips - payment office is on the reverse of the slip. If you don't know which one to use then by default you should use the Cumbernauld office.

On one payment booklet dated up to April 2013 it says..
Account name:
HMRC Shipley

On a second booklet they sent me dated from May 2013 to Apr 2014 it says...
Account name:
HMRC PAYE

So what office should i go for?

The payment booklet also gives the sort code and account number so as long as you use those details the payment will go to the correct account.

You can also tell the payment office from the bank account number

Cumbernauld account number ends in 39 and Shipley in 20.

If this is for payroll taxes you also need to make sure you use the correct payment reference to ensure the payment is credited to the right month. The payment reference for each month will be shown on each month's payslip.

Wow you are good, you wana sell me your experience!

So why on earth have HMRC sent me one book that ends in 20 (Shipley) and another book that ends in 39 (Cumbernauld)? If it doesn’t matter what office payment is sent to they should just have one.

The booklets are for two different years hence the two different payment offices. I imagine that they sometimes change offices to spread the workload - the introduction of RTI for payroll in 2013/14 may have resulted in changes to payment offices for internal reasons.

Ok makes sense to share the load. Well it says on the back of the booklet you can cancel the issue of the booklet which I am going to do because i can pay online.

Now seeing as though i have 2 payment booklets one for Shipley (which i have now cancelled online) do i need to cancel the second booklet which is Cumbernauld? or should i just assume both are now cancelled under Shipley?
