Following the hassles I have had with 1and1 recently I'm now looking at alternatives.

What is the difference between Shared Hosting and Reseller Hosting?

Many thanks.

Hello,

Reseller hosting and shared hosting are more or less the same thing. Reseller accounts, as it sounds, is designed for you to sell or provide services to other people. I'm not sure where you are looking, but if you look at the technical specifications you will see that the reseller package has more resources assigned to it.

I suppose you could also use reseller accounts for hosting multiple websites that belong to yourself.

But to keep it simple, they are the same thing, reseller accounts just have more resources and allow you to create accounts for other people.

I believe there is an issue you have to be aware of if you take on a reseller package, where your web sites are likely to all have the same fixed IP addresses.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in terms of link-building between any sites you create in the future on that space, certain advanced search engines may give less value to the cross-links between them in terms of ranking results interpreting them as being in the same IP family. Thus they will be downgraded for not being born of spontaneous or natural human enthusiasm.

...not quite spam, but a sort of mixture of meats all coming from the same tin.

If you are with 1and1 then you are probably already on shared hosting. If you then split that up and sell little bits ..you are basically a reseller.

Resellers just haveone big hosting package that they sell off in little bits.

It's a bit more technical than that, but that's a basic summary.

If you are having problems with 1and1 mail, set your forms to submit to more than one address at the same time.

All my mail is sent to 3 different Gmail addresses, two are backups.

1and1 offer quite a lot for the money, what package do you have?

James.

This isn't true, all our domains have the same IP address unless the customer requests a dedicated IP it wouldn't be feasible to give thousands of domains there own unique IP - using the same IP doesn't affect SEO in anyway. And there is a shortage of IP's ;)

Shared Hosting - if you just have a few domains, not very busy sites and want to be up and running as soon as possible.

Reseller Hosting - more aimed at developers/web design companies or individuals who have a large number of domains or require large amounts of Diskspace/bandwidth. Reseller hosting allows you to create your own reseller plans, users etc.

I have already set up 2 web-based email addresses for mail to be forwarded to but I'm getting fed up with the email downtime.

I currently have the 1and1 linux hosted home package.

Well, I will check my sources Carl, but I have gathered the impression that in cases where non-related websites cross-link + just happen to share an identical IP address, a shadow suspicion may logically be cast. In amongst all the mysteries of algorithms, this seems understandable maths.

The exceptions may be links coming from web professionals showing their portfolios (others?)...

None of this really affects the work or reputation of reseller hosting or those providing it - in all the debate smoke, I wouldn't want to be incineratating anything. I am certain everyone here is into ethical white-hat SEM!

However as I say, I will check my sources and get back to the thread with a quote when I can.

You are sort of correct... :)

If you have a link from one site to another, it gives the receiving site a boost in rankings. If the link comes from a site with the same IP (or sometimes even a site with a close IP) then it gets less of a boost, the idea being that it is probably a link from a site owned by the same person, or even a different part of the same site. This is fair enough, otherwise people would just create tonnes of links to themselves to get higher up the listings.
