Hi
I am need to share some file between a MAC and a windows PC via an external HDD. Any advice would be great (without telling the other person to just buy a MAC) ;)

You can always use a file sharing software that supports both Windows PC and Mac.
Just like our questFileShare product, called Divvied!
Click on the above link to find out more, or message me and I'll be very glad to help.

Can you not just plug the external HDD into the Mac, copy the files and plug it back into the PC? If the disk has Windows formatting (NTFS), it should work fine. The opposite is not true though - Windows can't easily find Mac formatting as far as I know.

If you want to keep them in sync, the Samba (SMB) protocol is a good way. You could also use a sync service like Dropbox or https://www.getsync.com/.

I did two hard drives. Both drives showed up on both devices okay but then when we to open the files... "These files appear to be damaged". Never mind the person just had to learn how to use my MAC very quickly!

Macs only have read only access to NTFS partitions by default. You have to install extra software to get write access to NTFS patitions. On the other hand both Mac OS X and Windows can read and write exFAT paritions so format the drive in exFAT and you'll be able to share files between Windows and Mac just fine.
