Setting up a website

Hi - I am needing a Domain name (that I will own!) advice on doing this and transfer etc appreciated, & also Hosting, this must come with Cpanel (as this is my preffered way of doing things!).

I have experience in web design, so don't require templates, skins etc, just reliable Cpanel Hosts that don't dissapear overnight!

Many thanks,
Looking forward to your replies.

Vidahost (.com), UKBF members, UK servers (unlike bluehost) and UK support... you don't speak to some script reading zombie either, you talk to the guys doing the servers or the 2 owners, Dom and Seb.

I have near 50 clients with them now and that's increasing on a weekly basis, I host 10 personal websites with them and 5 domains, and all support questions are answered within minutes.

What domain extension (TLD) ?
for .co.uk use a Nominet Member - list at http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrars/becomeregistrar/taglist/
- average price sub £10 per 2 years

for .com/net/org/biz/info/tel use an ICANN Accredited Registrar - list at http://www.icann.org/registrar-reports/accredited-list.html
- average price sub £10 per year

There are a few of us on both lists :D

As mentioned above hostgator is great for sites starting out online. The baby package they offer allows unlimited database/domains. Which would be great to get a site off the ground.

I think the 1 great thing about hostgator is the live chat they offer, if you have any questions you can pretty much get it answered within 10mins on the live chat.

Experienced in dealing with many hosting companies, and having dedicated boxes and partnerships with companies. I would recommend hostgator initially, to people who don't wish to lay out much capital.

Of course you would need to be comfortable with dealing with an American company.

Thanks,

Paul Southall

Stay clear of the American companies and stick with the UK, I'm sure they're great but support the UK companies (who aren't expensive either!).

123-reg is pretty good for domains, there are a good few hosting providers such as Vidahost, EZPZHosting, PC Smart Hosting and loads of others.

There is a forum called Web Hosting Talk which is pretty good for finding decent providers and a lot of good deals.

+1 for Vidahost. Tried many of the hosts mentioned in this thread in the past, but Vidahost are simply brilliant. I also have many clients with them.

One word of advice - DO NOT consider GoDaddy.

Regards,
Chris.

Couple of years ago there was one website nodaddy.com that site is no longer appear for some reasons. If the website is still exists, that will tell you many stories of godaddy's awful customer service but I am not sure whether the information provided through that website was the true experience of different customers of godaddy. hmm.. :(

I created a concise 5 part video series that walks you through this whole process...from getting a domain name and linking it to hosting, installing WordPress with cpanel, installing a WordPress theme etc.
Checkout my website below if you like.

Heh, haven't heard of that site but I can fully believe it.

A quick google for GoDaddy reviews will leave you in no doubt as to what their service is like.

...and their recent backing of SOPA saw a mass-exodus of customers.

According to The Register, they closed down the site in 2011.

As you say, it's always worth validating any complaint or recommendation yourself as often those partes have a vested interest. Sometimes a complaint maybe one-sided and leave out details, whilst a recommendations may precede an affiliate/commission link.
