I'm quite curious about this, not something I am looking at doing myself but have always wondered how you set up a company that provides gas, electricity and water like E-on or British gas?
i have looked and you will need to join a energy distributor, i am sure also by law you must have certain rules etc... i rekon a cheap one for a local area would be good, but i think start up costs cud b high..
but look at profits they making ud b a millionnaire
This is an interesting question and it is a curiosity of mine too. I imagine (just guessing) that it may be similar to telephone lines and broadband and the BT wholesale network. All the pipework and lines are already laid underground and managed by BT and in this case maybe British Gas, then since the industry was privatised, those companies would have to enable wholesale supply to other businesses who wished to offer their own branded utility services company.

mmm yeah, i have found people on the internet who will distribute but i expect start up fees are high, setting one up for a local town could be easy but i doubt it would profit as much as british gas.
believe it or not british gas use 7% of your bill for its profits!
