Server transfer

Hi all,

Looking to to a server transfer from Zeus - i think you all know why. Looking for an apache server and hosting package with support. we have 2 websites.

Additionally we are looking for someone to rebuild 1 of our sites, it was built on some unknown software and currently we can only access the files via the FTP control panel - which means manually coding everything. We would like to have the rebuild done in wordpress.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi,

Transferring data from a server isn't that hard assuming you have root access. However, the best way to do this would be if your hosting provider (presumably this is Zeus) is able to provide a snapshot of your server. It's not essential though.

Are you looking for a hosting package, help with performing your transfer and rebuild, or both?

Are you looking for a dedicated server or a VPS setup?

Do you know anything about your current server specs and are you hoping to keep these the same?

Thanks,

Marc

Hi Marc,

Im not sure what access level we have - the sites was not orginally built on the server its being hosted on and our other site is on a seperate server ( orginal to site build )

Im open to splitting the work as I understand the hosting and design can fall to different specialists, but having it all fall under the same contact name and number would be handy i guess. VPS really - I dont think we would need dedicated - its only 2 sites.

If you like, you can email me with whatever credentials you have and I can let you know just what sort of access you seem to have (with no obligation). That way, at least you'll know how difficult it might be to set things up and you can also get further quotes.

Even if you don't have root and it's just the FTP access for a site, getting it working elsewhere won't be impossible, just (possibly) a little more difficult.

Splitting up the work does make sense. FWIW, many hosting providers (ourselves included) have both a hosting department and professional services department which can do things like coding, setting up custom Wordpress sites etc.

Agreed on the VPS front - a dedicated server would be overkill and require more maintenance on your part.

Thanks,

Marc

The files are PHP so should be able to be moved easily enough!

Just FTP from old > your pc, and then from your pc > new server

There might be some config issues to fix especially in regards to a url rewriting (if you use one) but moving from Zeus to apache should be straight forward

If you buy a new hosting account, most hosts will do the transfer for you :)

Why not go for a web hosting company who offers fully managed solutions?

Ive heard that shared hosting can affect SEO - Bad sites on the same server, spam etc. Whats the opinion?
It can, but in my opinion you're more likely to be hurt by things such as a spam outbreak causing your mail server to be blacklisted.

Google's algorithms are clever, and Google realises that lots of site share a same IP address. Unless one specific IP address was hosting loads of dodgy sites, I wouldn't have thought Google would penalise everything on that IP address significantly.
