Has anyone used an SEO company that they would recommend please? We only have a very limited budget, so can't afford the monthly fees that some companies seem to charges. Would be really interested to hear who other small businesses are using, and your experience with them.

Hi Swagbags - choosing an SEO company can be very time consuming - If you are looking for cheaper SEO services it would be pointless going to larger agencies as they will not take any work on below the £1,500 per month mark.

Another issue with looking for smaller companies is you need more research into them as their portfolio is smaller. Could you not invest your budget into training your staff within SEO?

I recommend doing your own SEO in house. You will learn the skills you require and can continually employ them ongoing.

If you do outsource, take a look at SEO Positive. A friend of mine uses them and is very pleased with them. He gets lots of enquiries for his business but to be honest I don't know how much of that is down to them and how much is down to his own promotion of his site.

I guess you should get some sort of contractual agreement that you pay them based on results.

I would say the problem is that is the chances of you getting a sloggish sheep is very likely, less innovative and less experience and there is no time for mistakes!!

Thanks very much for your post. Yes we could do a lot of it ourselves, although would probably stretch our resources in terms of time and we would also be struggling to get good quality links back into the site.

There is no 'magic area' of the web where these so-called "good quality links" exist solely for SEO companies to use. They are all out there, and they are all obvious. You will know your industry much better than any SEO company. For example, if you sell computer games, just google "Computer games" or "computer games blog" or "computer games news" and you'll find all the top relevant sites for your sector. Approach the best sites yourself and ask them to host links in return for cash. Generally speaking, most SEO companies actually use rubbish links from sites that have temporarily got a high PR because of their own SEO, or because Google hasn't shut them off yet.

I get approached almost every day by SEO companies trying to do "link building" for me, and each time I ask them to show me some examples of their "high quality links" to businesses analgous to ours. I have never seen a single worthwhile link that I couldn't have got myself with 5 minutes research.

If you want any more advice I'm happy to help, for free, just to show you how awful 99% of SEO companies are.

Yah, that's right, there are no magic areas. You can find anything and almost everything you want over the internet. And in respect of a SEO company the best suggestion I can give is that there are no doubt some SEO companies who can do real quality work for you, but the matter of fact is when you are looking for Organic SEO services for your website, Google and the other search engines have the ultimate answer. Therefore, I would recommend if you have time to do the research in finding out a good SEO company who can work for you at considerable low rates and fulfilling your needs, better it is that you do the work all by yourself. It may take a bit longer than a SEO company can provide but believe me it is worth doing. Do your research and your promotion on your own (of course following the Webmaster guidelines) to get the best results for yourself.

Be careful about choosing your keywords as these keywords play a very important role in the ranking of a website. Better to choose in different patters mixing up competitive and less competitive keywords. Most of the SEO companies would suggest you to choose long tail keywords as it is a lot easier to rank up in that manner. In short do your SEO on your own, keep in mind the ever changing Search engine algorithms and choose your keywords carefully. If your main goal is to be on the 1st page of Google you don't actually need a SEO company who in most cases do the least research to study your business model. They just bring up their list of websites and start generating backlinks for you. Believe me it is a lot better to get one genuine backlink than having tons of irrelevant links.

Hello there. If you can't really spend much on SEO, how about learning a little about it and doing it by the book? Of course you'd have to get it first. You could get one from us, for example. Our managing director wrote such a book a couple of years ago, and it does have a few good reviews, if you google it. You can get the book here

Kind regards,
Holbi.

In the ever changing world of seo is a book actually a relevant medium? Especially one that's a few years old?

Hi Sam,

This particular book has the basics, that are always relevant, a few years back or now. And for the fresher trends there is always Internet and forums, and other sources. Everyone needs a start. It was just an idea, anyway, for someone who has a limited budget.
