Howdy all.

Hope you're enjoying your bank holiday weekend.

Just a couple of questions really .....

SEO : How do I find out the best keywords etc for SEO on my website?

PPC : Once my website is updated and fixed I will be looking into PPC. Does anyone know the typical costs of doing this or how much I should be expecting to pay for it? Bearing in mind I own a business that handcrafts jewellery and tiaras.

Do some research on your target audience. Figure out how they think, what they think and what they would search for if they were looking for what you're offering. Ask past clients, ask potential clients etc.

I can't imagine that market being too expensive but whatever the cost per click is, how much you pay for it will be entirely up to you.

When it comes to adwords it may cost 50p-£1 per click but you can put on £5 or £500 everyday to be spent. One of the best things you can spend money on when it comes to PPC is an Adwords specialist who will research the most effective keywords and optimise your campaign for the lowest cost per click. If you're not clued up on the inner workings of PPC or how to attract visitors to your add then you'll be throwing money away.

For keyword research, you could refer to these two articles which I find quite useful:

The only thing I would like to add is that it is always advisable to start with slightly less competitive terms and then move up the ladder.

The existing website has canonical issues that need to be addressed. A few things you may consider for the updated website:

1. The inner category pages lack content. A short description of each product would be a great idea.
2. The website needs to have query/contact form. Mentioning the email ID may not be enough.
3. Navigation from the home page to inner pages will have to improve.

You personalize all merchandise that you sell. That could be your USP and could be highlighted.

Not much to say about PPC. It is a quick way to lose money so don't DIY, if you haven't done it in the past. Take help of a professional to help you set things up.

Crystal j -

I think you should chase the expression "crystal jewellery" not "crystal jewels" - and you may find it helpful to get an older domain to do that and get your keywords into the domain - I am amazed at some of the expiring domains I have picked up recently for a handful of dollars - with age and keywords.

Also the singular expressions "tiara" silver tiara and so on are worth much more traffic and value..than the plural "tiaras" so put your effort into those. Where the potential profits for #1 ranking are in the hundreds of dollars a day. The competition is not very hard.

By and large.... jewellery is a competitive market on PPC, and hard to make money without being pretty good at it - so dont try PPC without help in this field. What you will pay depends on click thru and all sorts, so hard to generalise.

To find the best keywords, brainstorm them. Ask your friends, family, colleagues to come up with everything that they can think of when they consider your products. You can even go out and ask in the street, pub, etc too!

Remember that your primary reason for good keywords is to be found by your potential customers, not for SEO, so you need to get into their heads and work out what they might search on to come across you. Think why they may be looking for an exclusive piece of jewellery, eg a birthday present or weddings, and remember to include those too.

Look at your competitors' websites and see what words they use in their title tags, META tags, anchor tags, alt img tags, and visible text to get some extra ideas. Type some of your keywords into the search engines to see who you are up against. This will help you to understand where your niche may be, and how to target that audience/market. As kneoteric said, you need to find your USP and market that.

Add keyword rich content to your site by writing about how you make the jewellery, or about the different crystals you use. Any unique content that you can come up with help you stand out amongst the crowd.

Looking at some of the top sites who come up under crystal jewellery, you should hold off on PPC for now unless you can find some long tail terms that are cheap.

SEM isn't just about search engine optimisation and there are lots of other ways to market your site that will all help your ranking in the search engines. A couple of ideas:
You can post photos showing people wearing your jewellery on places like Flickr to get additional backlinks into your site too which will help your search engine rankings.
Find forums discussing arts and crafts, weddings, etc and post in those to establish your experience and knowledge and build your brand. Make sure you complete your profile so it links to your website.
Find a wedding site that doesn't sell tiaras and offer them a joint venture deal eg they link to your items and you link back to them and you take a commission for each sale from them and vice versa.
Seek out complementary not competitive links. eg weddings sites, or birthday gift sites, or handmade sites.
Set up a shop on etsy.com
List your site in all the directories that relate to your products. I just put "handmade arts crafts" into Google and it seems there are plenty.

Let us all know how you get on. There seem to be plenty of people here ready to help you out!!
