SEO Help please!

I am relaunching my PC Repairs business.

I have no prior experience with SEO however when I previously had my site up it was on 1st page of google. (just by posting on gumtree and some other community websites)

I have just got my site up and would like some advice on how I can get my website in 1st page of google.

Thanks

If you still have your old site there is a chance you might regain your old rankings by implementing a 301 redirect.

I would also strongly recommend you to work on local SEO. It is not that hard and you will be able to optimize your site for local results just by yourself :)

I agree, do a 301 redirect from your old domain to the new one. You can tell Google you've moved URL's in their webmaster tools. Is your site structure the same?

Also in regards to SEO, the resources posted so far (SEOMoz etc) are excellent, but unless you have a 40 hour week to learn SEO, I'd suggest getting a professional in. It's not an easy subject. It also constantly changes and theres only a handful of people that are actually good at it, despite the huge number of SEO companies.

Some pointers for hiring a company....
Cheap is likely not going to be good.
Check online recommendations.

What exactly are the doing? I can't see any decent links pointing to your site at all? In fact there are only 3 referring domains.
we have been with our SEO for over 7 years now for our furniture business. Never had a penalty and rank 1-3 for some very competitive keywords. We receive over 1500 visitors daily in season. They use link baiting to get some amazing links for us. We had one from UNEP, FSC, NHS and all natural. One post they did for us once caused such a storm we had calls from local media outlets and subsequently links from the Independent and Guardian newspapers.

Sorry, cant remember their name as my partner deals with them directly and he is away until the weekend.

Not true -This has been proven by myself on another thread - see Onsite seo vs offsite seo.

One of the most important things to get right is your title tags, make sure they are 70 characters long max (including spaces) are relevant to the page and include your keyword for that specific page. We use a good SEO company called Retriever Web Solutions to do ours and we are already noticing positive changes in our rankings.

Hi

Ali-V-8 is spot on to point out trying to retain a domain with history.
We would be happy to asses what you are looking to acheive if you want.
The thing is, Google has changed a lot (not sure how long a go you had success) but what you mentioned would not cut the mustard anymore.

Hope it goes well anyway and drop us a line if you have any questions.

Regards

no I have swapped from .com to .co.uk

I'd be interested to know the name of the company, please do update at the weekend. Thanks :)

Don't make the mistake of thinking hoards will link to you for nothing - they will want something in return but a basic link for link favour won't cut it anymore - well, not for something great it won't. The days of the one-way freebie are over, its not even a case of putting in effort, mainly as web properties are too highly valued and decisions of who to link to has always been in the control of the website owner.

To get links of value, requires much more than many have to offer. For example a 2000 page website Vs a 25 page one, which one has the greater SEO/Content value..... SO, why should the superior site give away its advantage for free - pretty obvious it doesn't need to, so why make such a rediculous request for a link in the first place.

The playing field is not level, which presents a major problem.

Only if you are out of touch and don't know how to get them :)

As if SEO's hold the power - they never had it to begin with.

Who likes begging emails, spam comments etc - its old hat and doesnt work anymore. The power lies with who gets to choose who they link to - not the beggers or article writers.

    Hi,
Follow some best Off-page optimization techniques...which gives more and more traffic and good targeted keyword positions in Google....i.e:
    - Guest posting
    - Blog Commenting
    - Link Wheel
    - Forum Commenting
    - Video Marketing
    - Slides submissions
    - Press Release
    - Web 2.0 blogs

These are certainly NOT the best techniques and should be avoided at all costs
    - Guest posting
    - Blog Commenting
    - Link Wheel
    - Forum Commenting
    - Slides submissions

The best thing I recommend is Video marketing via YouTube and embedding a good optimised video on your home page.

As I siad, - out of touch :)

Like I said, site owners decide who to link to - so out of touch doesnt come into it when they can cost you that vital exposure.

SEOs just need to be more original these days ;)

Yeah, well the majority aint, and I don't believe in this 'only the few can sort it cobblers' - SEO is totally dependant on what the search engines do, as when they 'fix things', you are screwed. Content and links are what matters, the search engines simply and only 'lists' information - the amount of info is what makes you stand out, as noone can rely on specific keyword searches anymore.

The way information is presented is the next step in giving easier, more detailed access and presumably encourages sales. Most people want only basic search experience, but there's few mass search tools at the moment, so access is limited to the 3 major engines, which isnt enough for companies to increase those sales using the web. Everything from email to blogging and telesales is cracked down on by companies using strategies to keep sales people out.

Thus easier ways to get into people's minds is required - and am sure the internet is the way to do this. Not looking like you're doing sales is better, even though everyone knows its what you're doing.

Forum commenting is practically the same as a forum signature, and you should never stick to one technique whatever it may be imho

SEOMoz is indeed a great site for up to dte SEO information, although it canappear a little confusing for those withlimited knowledge of SEO.
There is loads of information available online. My advive would be, its all about content. Make sure you have really good, quality, original content onyour site. Also, try to increase your online presence elsewhere. Facebook, Twitter and Google+ are great places to start.
Learn as much as you can about Google Panda and Penguin. SEO is all about putting work into your site. Regular updates, perhaps a blog or a news page.
    Good luck!
