SEO, getting to the top of google!

Well, first things first would be to have a look at your source code.

I looked at it for 5 seconds and noticed exactly why you wont get anywhere on google. Google reads text, not javascript or css. Clean it up for a start.

Ooops didnt scroll sideways,

Although my original advice still stands, clean up that source code. Take a look on seomoz.org for advice on that.

Then choose keywords, get them in the title tag, the meta tags, h1 and h2 tag etc. Like i said look at that site, will help alot

There are no short cuts, search engines do not like them.

Look at your code (as mentioned above), Good use of h1/h2/h3 tags, menu at the bottom of your pages, plus offer additonal internal links, that may entice buyers to view other pages. A more noticable link to your contacts page to instill confidence in the website, along with a local rate phone number and your actual office address also look at your titles.

Have your content match the niche you operate in, obviously without thoughtless repetition.

If you haven't got a google/yahoo webmaster account, sign up for one.

There maybe other elements, but this was from a quick look... :)

My only advice for a quick fix would be google adwords. It allows you to get to the top of the search page (you have to pay, but only if people click on it), it gives a good idea of what words and phrases you should focus on, then like the two guys say clean the site up and concentrate on driving some successful niche words through your site.

You are in an extremely competitive market with jewellery, and there aren't going to be any easy options unless you can really find a niche, so you have to be realistic with your expectations. Websites are seldom overnight successes, especially new ones in competitive areas.

Adwords is a good option for new websites, especially due to the google sandbox issue (which downranks new sites in the first several months leaving only less popular more specific long tail searches feasible at first), and due to the sheer competition of your market. Adwords will be expensive too, since you want ads in a competitive marketplace, so looking for niches will help here too.

To get an idea of what people are searching for, use the google adwords tool, make sure you select "Exact" not "Broad" in the "Match Type" column, but forget about the most popular searches, look for less popular searches which might not be targeted by so many competitors, but are still getting some searches nevertheless.

Then perform those searches on google to see who you are up against. For instance if you are thinking of targeting White Gold Chandelier Earings, do a phrase search (in quotes) to see how many sites have this phrase, around 7000, then to find out more specifically how many competitors are actively targeting this term, use the intitle:, inurl: or allintitle:white-gold-chandelier-earings command (google will substitute dashes for spaces), for that particular term there are up to about 480 potential competitors going for the ranking! (and there might be more using other techniques like inurl or inbound links).

Ideally though, SEO is something you really should have considered before setting up the site, as doing the right keyword research would have helped you decided whether or not to go for the online venture in the first place, how to budget for your internet marketing and adwords (so you don't end up spending all your money on the website setup), what to realistically expect and when, what categories and products to focus on, etc.

It does take time in a competitive arena, I will echo that sentiment.

And other people will be optimizing and buying keywords, so welcome to the jungle :)

Offline ad spend is worthwhile, and a constant stream of new content.

The Web isn't, well was never, a get rich quick place unless you IPOd before the last line of code was \n.

Slightly puzzeled by your request as jewellery is a high value product and therefore one presumes a high profit per sale.?

What reason do you have for wanting to go down the D.I.Y road.

Proffesional SEO might seem expensive at this stage of your business, but being on page one of google for your product terms would probably make your ROI up in a short period.

To get good ranking on google its critical to increase your pagerank. Google for more info on this term.

To simplify - you need to get more incoming links. 10 years ago or so that was relatively straightforward but these days everything is monetized - its tough to get links without reciprocating or paying.

I would look at first of all at ensuring all your meta tags are in. That is: Title, Description, and Keywords.

I could go into great detail here about what to do, but it would be too much info on one page. You have to start somewhere, so I would start like this:

In the first instance: Take your home page and say 2 or 3 immediately linked pages and get the content of the page to reflect the keywords you are aiming for. make them relevant to the page, and make them user friendly too.

- Select say 5 3-word key phrases that you would like to see come up Google.
Make the content (text) on that page reflect these keywords, repeat them fairly regularly throughout that page but without detracting from the site users ability to read the page properly. Don't spam it by just putting the word in again and again in a nonsense way, or use white text on a white background for hidden words. Use alt tags on any images and do not use images for text that is important but you could consider using an image for text that really is unimportant for the sites content.

Give Google time to get back to your site and see if/how this helps.

Use an online meta tag analyser to help you to analyse this. Watch the progress over a month or two. Is it working - are you climbing pages?

Backward links that are relative are useful. Links that are not relevant are not as useful to you. You can get links to show via Google using free area's to insert your website. Avoid 2-way links wherever possible.

Pay for SEO? I am not an expert at SEO and never have been, but i have all my websites on the front pages of Google through teaching myself. Only once did I pay for SEO and i spent a fortune over a period of 18 months and achieved very little for it.

Keep asking questions on forums at each stage, do one thing at a time, analyse, do some more, wait, tweak and compare the competition and just keep going.

Alternatively pay an SEO expert loads of money to do all this in less time - but personally I wouldn't without first trying a few things yourself just to see what is possible. SEO experrts would spend a lot of time on this and so the cost cannot be low. It also depends how they intend to do this as there are also very bad practices lurking around out there to get you up into Google too.

Be patient. it takes time to get this into or up the natural listings.

All the best, i hope this helps a bit.
