Hi,
I have been working on a new site for a friend's business. I have submitted it to Google about a few weeks ago. If I search for their industry in our area on a Google search, the new site does not appear but their old site on an old domain does. Is there any advice anyone can offer regards optimising the seo for the site to rank?

Cheers
Andy

First of all I assume that they still own the old domain right? In which case you need to set up a 301 redirect by editing the htaccess file on the old domain to send all visitors of the old site to the new. If you're only changing the domain and not the file structure, thisisn't too difficult. This also passes on some 'juice'. Also, assuming that both sites are set up with Webmaster Tools, perform a Change of Address in the settings of the old site of WT. Then submit the new sitemap in WT. Finally, perform a Fetch as Google on the new site to identify any errors.

In terms of seo, or more specifically, local seo, there are a number of things you can do.
-Make sure that the NAP (name, address, phone number) is visible on site and exactly the same in format and content everywhere on 'the net' (this also means finding all citations of the old domain and requesting updates)
-Ensure that the business can be found in local directories
-Verify the business with Google and ensure that it is linked to a Google+ page, with all business details entered
    -Produce location specific content
-Outreach to local businesses, blogs, and other sites for links/guest posts etc.
-Get the business involved in local projects which, when mentioned online, generate exposure and local citations
    etc. etc.
